From Bitterleaf Teas

Our first pressed Shaihong processed (sun baked) black teas, this tea is an example of why it’s good to keep an open mind.

Right out of the gate, things start off with light caramel and fruity notes in the early infusions, as more intense sweetness build in the 2nd and 3rd steeps. The body and mouthfeel is also quite impressive for a black tea in this price range, while a noticeable huigan (returning sweetness) lingers in the mouth and throat. As the session goes on, some floral notes start to emerge as well.

This tea was a bit of an unexpected, but pleasant surprise. Suitable for any time of day, this tea is also suitable for any weather, offering lots of warmth for the winter, and a refreshing crispness to suit summer. And while we’re skeptical about ageing Dianhongs beyond 2 years, this may have the potential to take things further – only time will tell.

My go-to lately when I feel like a gongfu session – it’s just so drinkable. Sweet, honey, caramel notes that keep going steep after steep. The taste and aroma is such a pleasure! I also don’t do full-size cakes generally – I like more of the little coin or tuo variety – so it’s fun to get out the beengslayer and be a badass getting chunks off this thing. Since it’s a Dianhong, I’m not really concerned about what happens aging-wise, just storing it appropriately and going for it periodically. If I didn’t have so may teas (I know, many of us have the same “problem”), I would have drunk this down by now. Basically, I’m enjoying the heck out of this, and can’t believe it took so long to review.

Gongfu!

My order from BLT’s anniversary sale arrived yesterday and I was too impatient to wait to try something, so this new black tea was first pick! It’s sweet, syrupy and delicious with strong malty notes of baked goods, dark honey, and a finish that reminds me of maple syrup and pancake batter – though, the name of this tea may have something to do with why those specific tasting notes popped into my mind. I found this a really enjoyable session, and great value for the cost of the cake. BLT has really been knocking it out of the park this year with their black tea selections; I’m stoked to see how this changes as it settles and ages!
