Tea of the Week for February 18, 2019!

As you may recall, last month’s teas (January 2019) had a ‘Retro Candy’ theme. I ordered several different candies for “research” and among those were some rather tasty butterscotch candies. And while I enjoyed them quite a bit, I felt like I wanted something more to them. Another dimension of flavor. More creaminess.

And so I came up with this: Butterscotch Custard Rooibos! Sweet butterscotch and creamy custard notes work with the rooibos (which adds a nice nutty flavor to the cup!)

I find this to be every bit as comforting as the old fashioned butterscotch candies – especially when you make it a latte! YUM! It’s organic, VEGAN, gluten-free, allergen-free and of course – caffeine free!

So, had a cup of this tonight. However, due to my horribly burning my mouth on a chimichanga last night, I can’t do a detailed review. My mouth is all messed up.

What I will say is that this is very creamy custard tasting. It isn’t overly woody like many Rooibos that I’ve had and I can definitely taste the butterscotch, even without sweetener. In fact, this was so tasty that I didn’t add my usual splenda! I guess you could say they aimed for butterscotch custard and got butterscotch custard! Great job.

I hope I can have more of this when my mouth heals.

EDIT: I wanted to note that, by the time this was at a temperature my injured mouth could handle, it was only lukewarm. I really screwed up my mouth. So yeah, the temperature probably affected the flavor.

So I’m currently drinking this one right now while I wrap up all my end of day projects. I like the idea/concept of the blend, and it also makes me REALLY crave a super vanilla and butterscotch heavy “Butterscotch Ripple” type of tea profile (like the ice cream) – perhaps on a black tea base!? However, I’m not loving this mug…

Like Kittenna, I agree that the flavour is almost entirely rooibos – though it does at the very least taste like a sweetened rooibos. I can get how butterscotch might just come across as sweetness, but I do feel like there’s a distinct taste to butterscotch that it’s coming across. Admittedly, as the tea cools down I’m getting a little bit more of a creaminess and some of the “high” sweet notes that I’d associate with butterscotch so it’s an improvement – but the flavour just isn’t quite getting me where I’d like to be.

As I said though, I love the idea – so if there’s anyway for a 52Teas mulligan/do over with the butterscotch level WAY more upped then I’d be be interesting.

From a costing side that might night be reasonable though – rooibos is pretty $$ to work with at the moment because of the climate conditions in South Africa, and there’s basically nothing else in this blend but rooibos and what I’m guessing is a liquid flavouring. Liquid flavoring is also pretty expensive; so to up the liquid flavouring in an all rooibos blend could definitely jack the price up to a point where it just wouldn’t be reasonable to ask people to pay…

Food for though, for sure.

There are two entries showing up for this tea; I’m not sure why. I’ve taken the liberty of changing the name of the entry I’m not reviewing under to include “DUPLICATE”.

Anyhow, I’m sadly not a fan of this tea. It’s very heavy on the rooibos flavour, which for some reason I’m perceiving as having a “going bad” flavour. Note that this is not isolated to this tea, and it’s something I’ve tasted in more than one freshly brewed tea lately, so maybe it’s just me. In addition, I’m not really tasting butterscotch or custard, unfortunately, just rooibos. So, not a fan, which is sad.

There are some rooibos blends that my family and I refer to as tasting “rotten, but in a good way”.

What a description! Haha. I think I know what you mean, though. For me, it’s more of a bearable vs. not bearable.
