Sipdown (198/200)!

Dexter’s package almost pushed me past 200 blends. Almost – but not quite. Thank God. I’m not ready to be back over 200 again…

Anyway, I brought this in a timolino to work and then mostly forgot about it all day. In fact, I didn’t start drinking it OR my other timolino tea until after I’d gotten home. I think that might be why this has an especially dry/astringent finish to the sip. Otherwise, it’s pretty good though.

In my first tasting note, I made lots of notes on the flavours so I wont go into much detail since it’s pretty much the same thing – but I do get more “floral”/sweetness in this timolino worth. Ultimately, a very neat experience which I send many thanks to Cavocorax for – but not something I’ll seek out again when I have plenty of other good, straight blacks available to me.

Cold brewed for about fourteen hours(ish), and then brought to work today. I only have enough leaf left for one more could brew – and I think that’s a good thing because even though this was a better taste experience then I’ve had before – it really wasn’t that spectacular.

Work today started off really shitty; basically I had to go back and restock an entire aisle because some of the trainees (partially myself included) had incorrectly stocked some Tupperware. It was tiring and really frustrating. However, thankfully the shift got much better and ended on a really positive note. And now I have tomorrow off; yay!

Anyway, this cold brew was pretty delightful; I mean, I still got that weird coffee note but it was smooth and I managed to pair the tea with something that complimented the coffee/raspberry really well when I was on break (PB & Blackberry Jam sandwich and Cadbury Cream eggs) and that made it a lot less noticable/irritating.

I sent a bunch of this to VariaTEA (and saw she had this today too), so I’m hoping she’ll be able to confirm or deny whether my tasting coffee in this is crazy or not.

Again, there’s no fireworks with this tea so I’ll be more than ok when it’s gone.

VariaTEA

Should I try coldbrewing this too? I have water bottles again so I set up a bizillion coldbrews for tomorrow (and by that I mean 4)

Roswell Strange

I like it better cold brewed than hot – but only slightly. I get “coffee” taste either way, though. I think it MIGHT be the wool flowers in it.

Weird cup of this tonight…

Basically it was just heavily spiced and, for the first time ever, the plum tasted artificial in an ungodly and unpleasant way. I think this was just a bad cup though – the teabag used was the last one out of the original group of them that VariaTEA sent me and it was probably covered in tea dust bits from all the other teabags stored in the same bag. All the icky “shaken out” bits…

Shout out to aisling of tea for keeping me stocked with this blend! I’ve been putting off making it since receiving it, because I know that it’ll spawn another unhealthy passion fruit binge – but after Nina’s Paris’ Ma Passion blend yesterday I just couldn’t hold out any longer.

So I made it in my timolino – and it was AMAZING. I guzzled that fucker down as soon as I was off work. Like, to the point where there wasn’t even a drop left. I’m actually proud I had the restraint to wait out my whole shift though. I guess it helps I made good tea choices today. DAMN did I miss this blend though.

Welcome home, Passionfruit. We’re only getting started.

In a timolino, at work while doing the closing paperwork (that sounds like a “Clue” kind of thing, right?). It looks like a lot of people had this one today.

I was saddened by the realization this morning that my tin of this is getting scary low. I may be joining Keychange in a sipdown of it sooner than I would like to be. Noooo!

Man, this is SO SO SO good though. I was describing it to a coworker and she seemed scarily impressed I could list all the ingredients in it. I feel like we’re going to get along really well (she’s one of the two people I’m working with now who’ll be at my permanent store location). Maybe I’ll convert her ;)

This could be the tea that does it!

Sipdown (191/193)!

Cold brewed for twenty(ish) hours and then brought to work for its “final hoorah!” as the tea I had with while doing stock: definitely need something flavourful and thirst quenching like a cold brewed tisane for long shifts.

I think I may need to pick this one up again; it surprised me with how consistently good it is each time I had it (I think all were cold brews). Plus, it really captures the fig flavour but pairs it with such a sweet/sour fruityness (think peach/rhubarb/light hibiscus notes) and just a touch of floral rose that there are so many fun layers to this that keep it from being “just” a fig tea. It’s interesting!

Mmm!

drank Cool Cucumber by DAVIDsTEA
16956 tasting notes

This is what I chose to get (which I picked in advance so I wasn’t freaking out over options and I, too, came off as a “Cool Cucumber”). It’s the blend I personally was MOST interested in out of the Spring Collection so I seized the opportunity to try it last night.

Lets just say that I was not disappointed! What I found to be really neat about this one was that I could simultaneously taste and pick apart all the contributing ingredients/flavour notes (cucumber, black tea, spearmint, melon) while also tasting the entire tea as a whole flavour. It was almost a sensory overload!

Honestly, the black base was maybe a bit drowned out by the mint – but it didn’t bother me; at least it wasn’t even anywhere CLOSE to being bitter/astringent. Spearmint is my mint of choice, so I loved the mint touch that added such a “cool” and highly refreshing quality to the tea: it also seemed to make both the flavourful and juicy melon and cucumber notes REALLY “pop!”. I can see how people who don’t like mint would maybe want to avoid this blend, though.

I WILL get more of this before it’s gone though; it’s just so fun and unique and I need more (I’m thinking 50g though, not the full 100g).

And hey, also definitely have to point this out; it’s not like I planned this or anything like that at all this is tasting note 1000! Woot!

Aerial hi-fives for spearmint!

drank Peaches & Cream by DAVIDsTEA
16956 tasting notes

So this is what he had last night when we stopped for tea before the movie. He was a DAVIDsTEA newbie; and it was interesting trying to get him to pick out a tea to try. Eventually the sales associate chimed in and we were able to narrow it down to this one.

I had a really hard time discerning whether or not he actually liked it; but I’m including a note on it (despite my not personally trying it or getting feedback from him) because damn(!) I could SMELL it. It smelled super creamy and I got a really weight peach/vanilla from the smell. It really made me want to try this, despite it originally being completely outside my radar and not interesting to me in the least as far as the new Spring teas go.

Also, there was an “incident” while we were enjoying our tea where the sales associate knocked down an entire shelf of timolinos and the look of sheer panic and horror on my face when they all fell to the floor was enough for him to go “You’re actually really concerned about that, aren’t you?”. Like, my panic and obsession was not well contained at all…

This was the second of the two “tag along” teas I brought with on the date( urghh, I’m full of emotions; VariaTEA should inbox me so I can rant and have some sort of weird “girl talk” session with her – because lord knows I need one and Tre’s not going to be very supportive of that).

It was ok; at first it was more mellow and pumpkin-y but then it started to build up into more of a tart hibiscus/sour apple cider flavour. Kinda “meh”, and a little all over the place. I had tried to keep the steep time really short to avoid that! Smeh!

drank Movie Night by DAVIDsTEA
16956 tasting notes

So I have some backlog to do from last night; after I got home from the movies/my date I was pretty exhausted, and I just didn’t want to do any sort of writing…

I made this in a timolino to go because I though it was really fitting to bring Movie Night with to the movies. I sort of always do this; it has become a thing. Actually though, the bulk of this was consumed on the bus ride to meet with him for, coincidentally (but not, because it was planned) tea first.

The tea was good; light and buttery and nummy. The movie was even better! It’s just such a shitty movie that it’s fantastic to watch. You know; that kind of movie. And watching it in the theatre is sort of like watching a live performance of RHPS where the audience shouts things/throws stuff at the screen/stage and it very loud and involved. Just fantastic. I honestly don’t think I’ve laughed so much and so hard since moving half a year ago. And then, of course, Wiseau and Sestero’s Q&A was hilarious.

I really did have a great time up until the taxi ride home – in part because the evening was ending and in part because the taxi ride itself was really horrible. The first one I called was stolen by someone else, and then when the second one showed up and finally got me home his debit pad was broken and I only had debit on me. That’s sorta something you should point out before you drive the person home, right?

So the taxi driver drove me to a bank to withdraw some money… And charged me for the drive there and back to my house. All in all, a $30 taxi ride. Motherfucking fuck that shit.

Also, I’m a little bit sad; the last thing he said to me last night was “I’ll message you when I get home”, and that never happened. Maybe I’m being impatient; but I really thought things went well and I can’t think of any indicator on his end that they didn’t…

Bleck. I’m full of emotions and confusion. Urghhh…

Crowkettle

Oh, if a taxi driver tried to pull that crap on me.. I’m sorry to hear about the tail end of your night, but the rest sounds like fun! Here’s hoping your date pulls through. :)

Suziqzer

Sounds like the perfect tea for the night!

I second that about the cab driver… He should have told you his machine was busted, not your fault he had to drive you to your bank machine!

Glad to hear you had a good time on your date… Hopefully he will message or call soon. Guys can be weird about getting back in touch.. Hang in there.

__Morgana__

Yeah, I’ve found that guy time is different. “When I get home” can mean anything, even though it sounds specific. Glad you had fun. Hope you hear from him soon.

Profile

Bio

Hello! My name is Kelly, though many people in the tea community call me Ros or Roswell.

I am a mid-twenties tea addict, blogger, and all around nerd. I grew up in the Prairies, but a few years ago I relocated to Quebec to pursue a career with DAVIDsTEA in the tea industry! I’m still working on getting my French language skills down…

My first introduction to tea, in any form outside of instant and bottled iced tea, was about seven years ago when I happened to stumble upon DAVIDsTEA while looking for a birthday present for a friend! I tried their Birthday Cake rooibos blend, and I’ve been hooked on tea ever since! In those seven years; I was introduced to the online tea community, expanded my interest in flavoured teas to include a deep love and appreciation for straight teas and traditional brewing methods, got a tea themed tattoo, started reviewing teas, amassed a sizable tea and teaware collection, became a TAC certified Tea Sommelier, & even came full circle by beginning a career in the tea industry with DAVIDsTEA!

I consider myself a Jack of all Teas, and strive to have a knowledge and appreciation of all tea types, formats, and styles of drinking. I don’t like to feel boxed in to just being a “flavoured tea” or “straight tea” drinker – my expectations may vary depending on the type of tea or how it’s been processed/prepared but if it’s good tea, it’s good tea no matter how it’s been made!

You name it, I probably drink it- and I’ll absolutely try anything at least once.

My default method of preparation is hot, Western style, and straight – but I’m not opposed to additions if I’m in the right mood. If I ever add something to a tea or use a different method of preparation I will ALWAYS call it out in the tasting note though.

I like to listen to music when drinking tea, especially when I’m brewing a large pot at a time or steeping Gongfu. Often I curate very intentional tea and music pairings, and sometimes I share them here in my tasting reviews. Music is something that I find can deeply affect the experience of having tea.

I’m also one half of the “tea and fandom” podcast GeekSteep where, weekly, we discuss newly explored fandoms over tea as well as try to figure out the perfect tea to pair with each fandom. You can find us on Spotify and Apple & Google podcasts.

Favourite flavour notes/ingredients: Pear, lychee, cranberry, cream, melon, pineapple, malt, roasty, petrichor, sweet potato, heady florals like rose, hazelnut or walnut, sesame, honey (in moderation), and very woody shou.

Least favourite flavour notes/ingredients:
Lemongrass, ginger, strongly spiced profiles (and most Chai in general), mushrooms, seaweed, chamomile, stevia, saltiness or anything that reminds me too much of meat that isn’t supposed to taste like meat…

Currently exploring/obsessed with: Sheng from Yiwu, Yancha (Qilan in particular), anything with a strong sweet potato note. Also, I need to try ALL the root beer teas! Searching for a really good caramel flavoured blend, ideally with a black tea base.

Please contact me at the instagram account listed below if you would like me to review your teas.

Currently I’m employed in the tea department of the DAVIDsTEA head office. While I’m still sharing my own personal thoughts on new & existing DAVIDsTEA blends, I am no longer numerically rating them due to the obvious conflict of interest. Any comments expressed are a reflection of my own thoughts and opinions, and do not reflect the thoughts and opinions of the company. Any DAVIDsTEA blends you currently see with a numeric score were reviewed prior to my being hired there and have not been adjusted since becoming a DAVIDsTEA employee.
