Teatulia Teas

This is one of the first teas that got me into loose leaf. I picked up the bagged version on Woot in a really good deal. Huge eye opener to what tea could and should taste like compared to the tazos and stash I was drinking.

It’s a good, straightforward, no nonsense black tea. Has a good roasted flavor to it. Almost a honeyed kind of sweetness. No bitterness as long as it’s not oversteeped. Good, clean taste – especially for a bagged tea. One of my staples.

I must agree with TeaEqualsBliss assessment – this really is a different peppermint. It has a deeper, more complex background that made me double check the label to make sure it was 100% pure peppermint and not a black tea/peppermint blend. It has a solid flavor to it, not just minty (which of course it IS minty). It has a smoothness to it. It is rich and delicious. I’m really liking it.

Unlike any other straight-up Peppermint I have tried!

What’s different about this one – you might ask…well, let me tell you…

This smells like a chewy-black tea and peppermint but it’s JUST peppermint…not a black tea. I LOVE the aroma with the chewy-bakey-cakey-ness to it!

It infuses fairly dark…about a medium green-brown. The taste is minty but oddly creamy too and I REALLY like that about this offering! It’s truly one-of-a-kind and minty-fresh but with a little extra something! It’s hard to believe Peppermint Leaves are the only ingredient!

I’ve tried this tea on several different occasions, and I re-reviewed it for the SororiTea Sisters because when I had the opportunity to try it again, I wanted to sit back and compare notes to see what I thought of it now. This Tulsi Infusion has a nice balance of flavors. The black tea is strong and robust, and the tulsi adds a nice warmth to the cup. Crisp and slightly minty, but there are also some “spicy” sort of flavors in there too. I like tulsi, and I think that this is a really good tea for someone who is new to the herb and wants to explore it.

I really like this one. I wish I had tried it sooner! I’ve had it for a couple of months now, it was sent to me free along with my order. (Have I mentioned how much I love Teatulia’s customer service? They rock!)

The black tea is rich and delicious, the tulsi is spicy but not hot. Invigorating yet soothing. I like this very much!

This is one of my favorite teas of 2010 — great combined with lemon/ginger infusions or on its own! Some may want to add a dab of sugar, but I prefer mine black!

I recently revisited this tea from Teatulia when it was included in my Tea Box Express box from October. This box is AWESOME! You get tea, a sweet treat, and at least one tea accessory. In the box for October, which was themed “Bee Happy” – I received a eco-canister of Teatulia tea, a jar of tea honey, a honey server, a teapot shaped tea bag holder, and a really yummy bee shaped cookie.

Since I’ve had the tea previously, I knew pretty much what to expect from it. It’s a robust black tea that would serve nicely as a breakfast tea. Pleasant and full-bodied.

I am heading to a bridal show with my oldest daughter and her future mother-in-law, so I needed something to get me going, and this is what I grabbed. It is a good, solid black tea. I really like it.

Attempting to wake up… and hoping this tea will help me.

Bold and brisk. Nice. And most importantly right now since I’m cold – it’s nice and hot!

Very nice! The tea is brisk and strong and vibrant! Hints of sweetness in the background, no bitterness. A very good, solid black tea.

I really like Teatulia’s customer service too. I recently had an issue, and they responded to it promptly, and went above and beyond to fix the problem. I like doing business with a company that treats me so well! In addition, their dedication to the environment is inspiring! An A+ to this company for these efforts!

So I’ve actually been drinking this tea a lot over the break…so much so that this is my last pot. I will say that it has improved for me, but not to the point where I’ll be getting more of it. And it’s not been terribly exciting to drink, but does deliver a good caffeine-get-me-awake feeling.

I’ve actually had a number of pots of this whilst being here at my parents’s place (snow has thawed slightly and I’ll get to go back home tomorrow). I think I’ve finally got this working right. I took the bags out of the cellophane bag, and then left the lid off the container overnight. That strange, musty taste is now gone for the most part, and I can enjoy it much better now. It’s definitely not my favorite Earl, but at least I’ve figured out a way to brew it!

Alright, having another go at this one. Reduced steeping time to 2 minutes, and the temp down to 200*. The odd flavor that I was thinking was “dusty” is still kinda there, and there’s still astringency (quite a bit for only 2 minutes), but I think what I’m getting now is more…meaty? Proteiny? It’s so hard to find the words for it. It’s much more palatable at this time/temp…I’m still not really getting much bergamot taste, though.

Okay, after thinking on this tea, it reminds me of those paper tasting strips in my genetics class. Did anyone else do that? They’re little strips of paper that have chemicals in them…some people can taste these compounds, some can’t, and the ability to taste each different compound is, apparently, a single gene trait. I don’t remember which ones we did, but I do remember being the only one who had to run out of the room to rinse my mouth out after trying one of them.

Okay, back to the tea…I did get a better cup this time around, and, in fact, actually finished the pot. I think I’ll shorten the steep even more next time around.

I think I need to tweak my steeping parameters on this one. There’s just something…not right about it. It’s got this toasted, dusty taste to it…and at first, I thought maybe I’d just gotten a bad batch, but the bags that LiberTEAS had tucked into my surprise box were the same (had those at work but didn’t log). Could this tea be picking up the cardboard taste? Any steeping suggestions?

I’m not sure about this Earl blend, to be honest. Perhaps it’s because I’ve just finished a pot of a different Earl and that’s affecting my tastes on this one?

It tastes toasted to me…in a similar way to the Coconut Cocoa from RoT that I had last night. In fact, if I didn’t know better, I’d say I hadn’t cleaned my Chloe well enough and that tea had contaminated this one. But since I’ve had 2 pots since the Coconut Cocoa with no flavor infringement, that can’t be the case. There’s some bergamot there, but the toasted taste really competes with it.

Okay, after letting it cool for a smidge, the toasty-taste eases up and the bergamot is more prominent. Still, this is definitely an Earl-light. Would be a good intro tea for those who want to start foraying into the world of bergamot-flavored teas. As for me, I’ll finish this tin (can cardboard be called a “tin”?) and frolic with other Earls.

Finishing off the last that I have of this tea in my cupboard – it was part of one of my recent tasting boxes from Foodzie. I love it when the tasting boxes include tea!

I am noting a hint of savory bitterness toward mid-sip that I didn’t pick up on in previous tastings. It’s quite nice, actually, as it gives an interesting contrast to the cup.

A really good Earl.

I am finishing up the last that I have on hand of this. I wanted to have more of this today mostly because I wanted to try to address Jaime’s concerns about this tea.

I don’t find it tasting of cardboard, or even “dusty”… but it is a stronger (and different tasting) base which I attribute to the black tea base. It is a Bangladesh-grown tea so it does taste different than a typical Earl Grey would (or should!) It does have kind of an unusual taste to it – but not a bad taste, just different.

But I do see where you’re getting the “dusty” comparison from… the astringency in this is kind of powdery/starchy. It isn’t a heavy astringency, so it’s kind of a light “dusting” of the powdery sensation. I find that the astringency becomes stronger the longer it is infused… so I recommend a lighter infusion time with this particular tea… just 3 minutes.

Delightful! Today has been a fantastic mail day – I got two packages of tea (and these orders arrived SO fast!) and a package of art goodies, as well as good news from my bank… and NO BILLS!

This is one of the teas I received today… and it’s delightful. It is a lighter version of Earl Grey, in my opinion, because the bergamot is a bit lighter. But along with that, it has a crisper, cleaner taste than some Earl Grey teas I’ve encountered. It doesn’t taste heavy or oily or soapy… just beautifully bergamot-y!

YUM!

Not at all what i expected. A very robust tea. Almost doesn’t taste like a green. Good for a quick cup.

I forgot to thank TeaEqualsBliss in my last tasting note. She sent me the Earl Grey from Bigelow, and she sent me this Lemongrass from Teatulia – THANK YOU TeaEqualsBliss

This is very nice. It has a buttery sweet smoothness to it, it isn’t overpoweringly LEMON – like a puckery/sour lemony flavor – but a sweet, lemon-curd-y kind of lemon. I like it very much.
