I took the name of this tea as much from the Google Chrome translation as possible. I bought this recently using the Taobao agent Taobao Focus. This tea was a risk because I had no knowledge of it. For all I knew it could have been terrible or fishy. Luckily it was neither terrible or fishy. There was a fair amount of fermentation flavor to this tea despite it being from 2005, or at least that was the year the Taobao seller said it was from. It was fairly bittersweet in the start. This lasted four or five steeps before it developed more of a sweet note. Not sure if I would call this one chocolaty but I did like it. I think it was not quite as good as the one from Long Run Tea that I reviewed yesterday or the day before.

I steeped this tea twelve times in a 150ml gaiwan with 13.3g leaf and boiling water. I gave it a 10 second rinse and a 10 minute rest. I steeped it for 5 sec, 5 sec, 7 sec, 10 sec, 15 sec, 20 sec, 25 sec, 30 sec, 45 sec, 1 min, 1.5 min, and 2 min. I could get a couple more steeps out of these leaves if I wanted to continue.

+1 for self-translated tea label.

I took a risk and bought this big brick of tea on Taobao. I only paid around $85 with shipping. The shipping was expensive because the Taobao Agent charges a profit on shipping. They claim they charge no fee on shipping but their shipping is at least 25% higher than the equivalent from Yunnan Sourcing or Awazon. Anyway, this brick was a risk. I didn’t know the seller so I didn’t know what I would get. A translation of the back of the brick confirms it is in fact from 2004 so there is that. No way to tell if the leaves are early spring as claims. The leaves of this brick were pretty large but not quite Huang Pian leaves large. The seemed a slightly lower quality too. But then most bricks are somewhat lower quality. The brewed tea smelled of wet storage so at first I thought that that might be a dominant note to this tea. There was some wet storage taste, for the first two steeps but it was not too strong. There was also some fermentation flavor, for about the first three steeps, but it was not too strong either. The tea had partially cleared. I guess a big brick like this is going to age slowly. A nice sweet note developed after the wet storage note went away. There was never really any bitter taste to this one. I don’t think it was real chocolaty as ripe puerh tea goes. Not sure how to best describe the sweet note. This developed into a very nice puerh to drink. I am quite pleased considering how much I spent on this. I only gave this ten steeps. It would have gone a couple of more steeps but I think not a lot more. This is one I will want to revisit in six months. The wet storage taste that it had may be replaced by something better. You can get some incredible bargains on Taobao but there is always a risk. Unless they lied on the packaging, the back of this brick confirms it was made in 2004. But the seller could have sold me 2015 ripe and I would have had no way to know until I drank it. So at least the seller seems to be selling what he claims to be selling.

I steeped this tea ten times in a 150ml gaiwan with 13.8g leaf and boiling water. I gave it a 10 second rinse and a 10 minute rest. I steeped it for 5 sec, 5 sec, 7 sec, 10 sec, 15 sec, 20 sec, 25 sec, 30 sec, 45 sec, and 1 min. The tea would have gone a couple more steeps but not a lot more. The leaves were almost finished I think. This was very good overall for the price. I should note that the name of this brick is not exactly as on the website. I did my best to transliterate the name into something reasonable. If anyone wants to look at this brick on Taobao I would gladly send them the link in a pm or even list it in a comment if someone is interested.

yunnan sourcing is very accurate. thus why i order 90% of my puerh from them

AllanK

Taobao is always a bit of a risk but you can get some incredible bargains there. Some of the tea sold on Taobao is quite good. I do buy a lot of tea from Yunnan Sourcing.

Kirkoneill1988

never bought from taobao before :(

AllanK

You basically have to buy through an agent because Taobao doesn’t really do international shipping or for that matter accept US currency. I used Taobao Focus for this order. I used to like an agent called Taobaotube but they are out of business. The problem with most Taobao Agents is they charge a lot for shipping. Taobao Focus claims they don’t charge a fee on shipping but their shipping rates are noticeably higher than someone like Yunnan Sourcing, as much as 30% higher in my estimate. And they use cheaper shipping on top of it, EMS with a CX tracking nnumber.

AllanK

Still, this brick was cheap at around $85 with shipping. And it was pretty good so as to be well worth the price.

Kirkoneill1988

whats the average price w/o shipping?

AllanK

This was about $50 or so without shipping. It was technically 250 RMB as it was priced in Chinese currency. But that translates to roughly $50. The website is www.mytaofocus.com if memory serves me or maybe it is www.taobaofocus.com, not sure. They list shipping charges on a page of their website. Taobao itself has some incredible deals. Taobao Focus lets you search in English through their site whici is nice. They now pass along seller sales. They used to charge you full price.

Kirkoneill1988

i’m not sure if i understand what you mean by the original price compared to the price you got it for.. maybe i missed it

AllanK

If the item was on sale Taobao Focus didn’t pass along the sale. They used to charge you the full price and pocket the difference. No they give you the sale price on their translated catalog. It used to be to get the sale price you had to manually enter it. Now it is automatic. You get the sale price and Taobao sellers run a lot of sales.

Kirkoneill1988

oh so they don’t offer the full price now. i understand now

AllanK

Yes now their translated catalog of Taobao shows discounts. They don’t charge full price if there was a discount. The full price on this tea was something like 1650 RMB. I wouldn’t have bought it.

Kirkoneill1988

how much in american is 1650 RMB?

AllanK

I don’t know exactly but at least $300 I would think, maybe $400. I don’t know the exact exchange rate. You could google it and get it online. But it was a big difference in price to pay 250 RMB instead of 1650 RMB. The tea turned out to be good but would not have been worth the price at 1650 RMB.

AllanK

When you deal with Taobao you get used to prices listed in RMB instead of US currency.

Kirkoneill1988

Ok, that’s the price I was looking for :). Glad you could get it at a great discount

You might try breaking off 50-100gm of this brick and leaving it in a loosely covered container for a few weeks or a month. I find improvement in humid-stored teas with that approach.

AllanK

The wet storage taste on this one was not strong. I don’t even think it’s necessary to break any off. I think it will go away by itself in six months.
