I very much wanted to like this tea. It was a special order based on a Teamailer’s recommendation, however, it seems that our tastes diverge on this blend. The smell is overpowering: the fragrance dominated my tea cabinet so badly that I had to seal it in extra Ziploc bags. The flavor is equally intense. I found it too perfume-like for my palate.
I love this tea. Nice and citrus-y but not overpoweringly so. A bit lighter than most EGs. Has a bit of a lemon taste but not enough to make you think of household cleaning supplies or anything. Really nice and perfect with a little sugar and a dash of milk. Sadly, this is the last of it – a running theme with my black teas currently. Just an excuse to get more!
Found this in the back of my pantry – only 7g so I put the whole thing in 9oz to brew for 1min. Tastes like a mild black but with nice soft citrus notes. I think I remember it being smokier – not sure if age or the way I brewed it made the difference there but I like it.
Though pretty good, Sencha Imperial falls short of Mariage Freres’ higher grade of Sakura Tea. I’m probably a harsher critic than most. And it is cheap enough that you can actually afford to drink it if it suits you. I just won’t purchase any more of it once I finish off this tin.
We purchased this back in February, and to our surprise the flavor is already falling off. We store it in an air-tight tin from Mariage Freres so we are not doing anything odd. It just demonstrates that good tea has a finite shelf life. If you like it, drink it all before it goes south.
