So I made a pot of this yesterday and then let it chill, with the intention of using it to make rice for dinner. I was interested to see what it would taste like to make rice using tea, especially a jasmine green tea. Well, the making did not happen until this morning, but it did happen! And with that rice, I drank the chilled leftover tea.
It has a distinct jasmine flavor, accompanied by a toasted taste that comes from green tea being heated too much.
I have been drinking this tea for twenty years. It’s probably my “house tea”. Here’s a lesson I learned years ago sampling and drinking tea in SF’s China Town. Buy the higher grade. You can buy loose tea at $20 a pound or at $60-80 a pound. I can get multiple cups off the higher grade so on a unit cost basis it’s cheaper than using $20 tea. I drink a lot of Chinese teas, but now and then I’ll have cup of licorice tea to settle the stomach. I also like gunpowder tea, and there’s a very common variety of tea that comes in a molded ball form (can’t remember the name at the moment). It’s a good anti-cancer tea. I used to get it in China Town for a $1 a piece, and they give you a baker’s dozen for $12.
LiberTEAs sent me a few of these and I thought I would give it a whirl! I have LOTS of projects to fill the rest of my day and I don’t want to get lazy!
This says 1 shot equals 3 cups of green tea! Hum…interesting!
As for the taste…
Mostly grape! It’s a HARDCORE Grape, too! Like Welches Concord Grape Juice. Almost like if you were to get the concentrate of that grapejuice and put a little less water in than you should…sort of that kind of grape taste, really. In the middle of the sip I can taste blueberries! Very nice and a good backup to the grape flavor. The end of the sip on to the after taste is where I could pick up on the acai. I can taste the pom and that seems to flow throughout the sip but not overly so. I can’t really taste the green tea because all of the other flavors are so loud but this certainly is an interesting green tea product that I am sure to review on SororiTEA Sisters at some point in the future!
I will post in comments any aftermath as I am finishing up the ‘shot’ as I type.
I have to go pick up my daughter in a few minutes, so I decided to have one of these – it worked GREAT for me last week, I am counting on it to provide me the energy I need to hike it up that hill!
I am drinking it a little more slowly today than I did last week so that I can note any flavors that I might have missed. It still tastes a lot like grape juice. Like grape juice with pomegranate and blueberry and acai berry. Very little green tea taste, but I get more today than I remember tasting a week ago.
It’s good though, and it definitely works. Not jittery – just energized! And no crash in a few hours.
I have never had one of those energy shots… and I guess this is a green tea version of those. Honestly, I had my doubts. I was worried I’d be all jittery or something.
But, it’s actually pretty tasty. I drank this about an hour ago, just before going to pick up my daughter from choir (I figured I could use the energy since it’s quite a hike). The flavor is like grape juice. It’s difficult to discern any green tea flavor. The finish offers some pleasant berry flavor. It’s tasty enough and it’s managed to dispel my doubts about this energy drink, although it doesn’t really taste much like tea.
Bonus: no jittery after effects like one might get from other caffeine energy shots.
