From my November Sips by box.
I admit, I’m always a bit wary of flavored puerh teas, I feel like I can appreciate puerh on its own, but it can be weird in blends. I guess it depends on the flavor profile of the puerh itself, and also what it’s mixed with.
Happily, this was a nice flavored puerh. The puerh itself is very smooth and rich. It’s earthy, but not overwhelmingly so. I really like the combination of the peppermint with the cinnamon, and also the cinnamon with the puerh. The vanilla mostly adds sweetness and a hint of a creamy character. The cinnamon imparts a nice sweet warmth and tastes very natural. The mint is probably the strongest flavor for me, and it’s a generic minty flavor profile. A little bit on the herbaceous side versus the fresh, cooling one.
I quite liked this. I’ll have to look into trying some more mint & cinnamon blends, and also more puerh & cinnamon. I think I’ve only had Lupicia’s Cinnamon Cookie Puer, which I was not a fan of…
Flavors: Cinnamon, Creamy, Earthy, Herbaceous, Herbal, Mint, Peppermint, Smooth, Sweet, Woody
I’m the opposite. My palette still isn’t developed enough for puerh so the flavoring helps when done right. Of course, bad flavoring can ruin any tea.
I’m the same way with Pu-Erh. I initially thought I’d prefer pure pu-erh ripe for a coffee like experience, then I realised, I have a hard time with pu-erh period unless it’s got decent flavoring. I can sit for a sheng session, but I only do those three times a year. I’ve been drinking Bohemian Breakfast, which is a vanilla and pomegranate flavored shou/black tea blend with currants. I usually find fruit and desert flavors go well with a non fishy shou.
I love it when a company knows how to use puerh in a blend and with flavor well! I don’t think I’ve tried Cinnamon Cookie, but their Chocolate Strawberry Puer is one of my favorites.
To be honest, using puerh as a base for vanilla sounds interesting for me :)
I wonder if this is the same vanilla mint puerh that’s as available from Zen Tea and a bunch of others years ago. It was pretty good!
I don’t drink plain puerh often either, just because it’s not my preference, probably because I haven’t acquired a taste for it.
@Dustin – I just got a pouch of Chocolate & Strawberry Puer with my Momijigari order! I’m not sure if I’ve ever tried it, so I’m excited to give it a try.
@Martin – The weird thing about this tea, the vanilla is not even one of the prominent flavors lol! It’s more of a cinnamint puerh with a touch of vanilla. Poorly named I think.
I love the Chocolate & Strawberry Puer!
I opened it when it arrived and it smells amazing! I’ll have to try it tomorrow.
