What is going on here???? I love this. A floral jasmine-y tea?!
I am shocked. Could it be that my body has decided to end the Jasmine embargo? Or perhaps its mild enough that I can enjoy it in moderation.
All I know is it was a lovely oolong with nice floral notes and a pleasant aftertaste. Thanks SIl!!!
From the Great Canadian TTB.
Well its official…I just don’t like pu’erh.
I am not terribly knowledgable in the subject but I know I have tried both shu and sheng, I have tried what I would consider lesser quality and better quality pu’erh. I have tried both pressed/brick and loose types. I have not tried anything real expensive but that is because I don’t want to spend money if I am not going to like it and I don’t want to waste good tea.
I gave this one a try this morning. The dry tea reminded me of fresh, moist potting soil. Not my most favorite flavour (:P), but not too bad. I did about a 10 second rinse, then steeped for 30 seconds. I thought I would steep for a shorter period of time just to keep the flavours more subtle. On smelling my first steep I get mushrooms. I always seem to get mushrooms with pu’erh. Also a mineral smell, like canned mushrooms. I am also getting the scent of a stale, old, lake. Ha ha. Like when the water has not been moving for a long time and you are standing on the wet shore.
The taste of the brewed tea is giving me the taste of very wet dirt/soil. It is reminding me of old grass clippings/compost, like the grass clipping pile at the end of the summer. The tea was fairly bold and thick considering the short steep. I tried to make my way through the cup in case the flavour profile changed. But after a few sips I just couldn’t do it.
This pu’erh was not bad. It is just not what I enjoy tasting in my tea. I think it is fair to say I have given it a good shot. I am not totally writing off pu’erh, there are some flavoured blends I don’t mind, and I am going to try “white” pu’erh but I think I am done my “do I like it or don’t I like it” phase.
Preparation
Put some sugar and cream in it like coffee. (Or sweetener) lots of people drink puerh like coffee and prefer it this way. Sugar (sweetener) often brings out a caramel flavor you don’t taste otherwise. Even my younger grandsons like puerh lattes.
Or add cocoa nibs, chocolate mint, or both. I always end up adding sweetener.
Of course no one can say you didn’t try!
BTW: White puerhs that I have tried are very close in taste to white peony.
Thanks to Sil for providing this sample and to those who added this info on steepster so I can add a note. I know TerriHarpLady updated it last so thanks!
The only recognizable (read:English) words on the pack was the address and the name of the company. I even showed it to the people at work who couldn’t tell me a whole lot more, and they majority of them are Chinese. Granted, they are from Hong Kong, not mainland, but still… I thought someone there can decipher.
And omg, is this ever floral. I see the tasters before me described it as mild. It is not mild to me. It is overwhelmingly floral. And I’m pretty sure I burned the leaves because it is bitter. My name should be tea klutz but it was taken. Given no steeping instructions I did my best, 3 minutes in what I thought was 180ish water. I should have treated it more like a green, lowered the temp even more to err on the side of caution. Sil, I think I badly butchered this.
But what I can tell you is that I enjoyed having this exotic morsel, floral bitterness and all. If it was available, I probably wouldn’t buy it though. No longer a fan of floral stuff, I think I od’ed on jasmine a while back.
Haha I hated this too. I dislike florals but t was part of a pack and random teas from new places are always fun :)
Lol. I was trying to cleverly veil the word “hate”. It is not nice to say bad things about samples people send you, is it? Although I remember a certain someone, let’s not name names, who said recently “thanks. This was nasty!” :p
sipdown! go me! at this rate i could almost get to 200 today…almost lol
This is a really earthy puerh. i picked it up in beijing when i was there in february and haven’t had a chance to really try it. I had mostly picked it up to share with others and most of it has gone that way. I much prefer the puerhs that i’ve had from verdant and mandala but this isn’t bad for an every day sort of puerh – provided you can handle the earthiness of this.
Mystery Sample #3 from Sil
I fully expected this to be a green tea, since the wrapper was green, but then again, one never knows, right?
It’s a decent green, with the flavor of spring peas & a nice thick almost resinous mouth.
Thanks again Sil :)
This came in a package that contained teas for all seasons. Jasmine (spring), oolong (fall), puerh (winter) and green(summer). So those will be the other mystery teas lol
I’m pleased that I guessed them all. I only received 3, no Jasmine.
I can see the bottom of the box you sent now! LOL!
Mystery sample #2 from Sil.
This one is a nice green oolong with a lovely floral fragrance. The flavor is mellow & comforting.
I love the picture on these samples :)
They come in really cute little tins….all the tea is pre-packaged. Funnily enough, remind me to send you some of the puerh cakes that my friend ocean has sent me….got another package at the office today with two more “teas from china” stuff she and her family drinks every day.
Sipdown! I’m playing a little game of ‘name that tea’ today.
This is one of 3 mystery tea samples from my trade with Sil. The majority of the writing on the red envelope is in Chinese, however in fine print on the back I found Beijing Wuyutai Tea Company. In even finer print there is a website listed, with an english translated version at en.wuyutai.com. The history of the company is available on the site, along with their selection of teas.
I took one whiff of this package & knew it to be a Shu. It has the characteristic earthy musty haylike flavors & aromas, & was a nice cup for a rainy day.
SIPDOWN! (206) I really wish i knew more about this tea because it’s really quite delicious as far as greens go. It’s refreshing and ‘juicy’ and i totally gulped my last cup down without noticing how quickly it was going.
I figured i really should get around to drinking MY samples some of the china teas i brought back with me. This one is pretty good for a packaged green tea. The leaves are light and fluffy and the brew is really refreshing. It’s almost like drinking spring water only it’s not water and clearly has that green tea taste to it lol
