485 Tasting Notes
A good tasting and decently complex white tea, and one which goes a long way brewed gongfu style. The first couple steeps (I keep them around 10-15 sec.) are pretty heavily floral. The next few keep the floral flavor but also add an interesting flavor to the mix, to me it tastes like nettles, but I could see other’s descriptions of it as “peppery.” It finishes off pleasantly, as I can go up to around 10 infusions which are a progressively lighter floral flavor. Pleasant bitterness brushes the mouth when brewed with slightly longer times in the early steeps, but if brewed with too hot of water, this bitterness becomes rather unpleasant, as I learned.
Flavors: Floral, Pepper, Sweet
Preparation
A good, but subtle ripe puerh. I’ve only had really good results using a lot of leaf and boiling water. It tastes lightly woody and sweet, but can be difficult to get good flavor out of.
Flavors: Sweet, Wood
Preparation
Pretty strong ( but not bitter) early infusions, followed by some good sweet woodiness. Aroma is reminiscent of cherrywood, but does not really come through in the taste. A delicious and convenient ripe.
Flavors: Cherry Wood, Moss, Sour, Wet Wood
Preparation
Tasty, easy-drinking ripe puerh. Did about 4g in a 100 ml gaiwan. I only did one rinse, then started with short steep times, around 8-10 sec. Infusions 2-4 were rich, creamy, and chocolatey tasting. Later infusions had the iconic ripe “woody” taste. Only lasted me around 7 steeps, but a good daily drinker, especially in the winter.
Flavors: Chocolate, Wet Earth, Wood
Preparation
Not bad (Certainly won’t complain for the $3 I spent on 100g of it). With quicker steep times the main flavor I get is one of toasted nuts, especially for the first few steeps. The nuttiness drops off after around 3 steeps, replaced by a light corn-like sweetness. The dry leaves smell strangely of the inside of a pumpkin, and the wet leaves smell like roasted pumpkin seeds. At first I thought this tea was roasted, but I now believe that was simply because I was using too hot of water at first. Not really good enough that I’d go and buy any more of it.
Flavors: Roasted Nuts, Sweet
Preparation
I get a bit of sourness out of this, some malt and honey tones to finish off…earthy throughout. Better if brewed with a little bit less tea than others imo.
Flavors: Earth, Honey, Malt, Pleasantly Sour
Preparation
A pleasant tea, way overpriced for what it is (but I got it as a free sample ;). Super smooth feel, surprised by the buttery flavor/feel – I didn’t believe them when they said that in the store lol. Was surprised by the smoothness. Also a decently honey-sweet finish to it. I will have to try out some other yellow teas sometime in the future. Resteepable at least 4 times Western Style, so that’s decently impressive.
Flavors: Butter, Honey
Preparation
Not a fan of this one. The myriad flavors don’t seem to express themselves very well after a shorter brewing time, but a longer one makes this tea come out pretty tannic. Fruits and stuff totally gone after one steep, and not enough actual tea in it to make more than one steep worthwhile. I suppose its one redeeming quality is that it made a halfway-decent iced tea.
Flavors: Fruity, Tannic
Preparation
Probably my favorite tea from Teavana (trying to get away from Teavana tea into higher quality stuff online). Does well western style and “grandpa” style…just tossing a bit of it in a thermos and pouring more hot water on it all day. Doesn’t go bitter if oversteeped. I don’t really get much jasmine out of this one, but it is pleasant. Could possibly see myself buying this again as a super cheap oolong for grandpa style when I’m feeling lazy.
Flavors: Floral, Fruity
Preparation
A pretty nice one, at least on the first steeping. Second steeping still pretty good, but by the third it was basically wiped out (Western Style). Get some fruity tones from the earlier infusions, sort of hay-ish flavor throughout.
Flavors: Fruity, Hay
