1908 Tasting Notes
I got a sample tin of this tea from Ricky in a trade (thanks man!).
Now I’ll start off by saying that the first and only experience I’ve had with gunpowder green tea was rather…regretable. It had a muddy quality to it that I found unplalatable. This tea, however, brewed up nice and clear, turning the water a dark, honey-coloured shade.
The tea has a bit of a smokey, roasted sort of flavour, which I think comes at least partially from the pan-frying method that is used to process Chinese greens. There’s also a grassy quality to it that reminds me of traditional style matcha – although the taste is a bit coarser and astringent.
So all in all, it’s a good tea that’s restored my faith in the ability of gunpowder teas to taste decent. ;)
Preparation
Now this my friends, is good jasmine tea! It’s lightly fragranced and not artificial smelling or tasting, so you don’t feel like you’re drowning in a vat of perfume. The base is nice, a little bit coarser than the A & D version, but it still goes down quite smoothly.
Preparation
When I opened the tin the smell was a wave of blueberry – not quite fresh blueberry, but more of a blueberry sauce. The taste, however, is a bit of a dispointment to me. It’s sort of a generic tart, berry taste, not at all sweet or distinctive.
Preparation
Mighty Leaf teas always look so pretty and I like that the sachets are transparent enough to see the ingredients inside. This particular tea smelled a bit like pungent, musky, mint when it was dry, but when it’s steeping the lemongrass took its turn on the stage leaving me wondering if there was any actual ginger in the Ginger Twist!
The flavour is almost a mish-mash and I’m not sure if I like the way the various elements have blended together. There is ginger but it’s actual quite weak-tasting – of course I’m used to drinking pure gingerroot tea as a medicinal tisane so maybe I’m biased.
Preparation
I toned down the steeping time and temperature in hopes of not feeling like I’m drinking a cup of jasmine soap. The result is much more drinkable but I’m still getting a bit of jasmine soap on the aftertaste, unfortunately. It’s not terrible but not great either and I think when I buy the Series 3 set I’ll pawn off this one on somebody else.
I’m sorry Takgoti, I tried to like it. :(
Preparation
I got this tea in a trade with Silvermage2000 along with a bunch of others – all I can say is that she has good taste in tea. :)
The smell of this tea is partially toasty and partially burnt caramel – but a nice burnt, not the yucky, charcoal burnt. The flavour isn’t overly sweet (unlike the title, lol) but it’s more like a nice, light, malty assam with a faint hint of sugar. It’s a pleasent tea to drink, but not anything that I found overly special.
Preparation
This isn’t a tea for someone who wants a sweet, milk chocolate flavoured drink. This tea is pure, earthy essence of raw cocoa.
And I love that way. ;)
Preparation
@Cofftea: So you got the teas I sent you? I did recall hearing you rave about the Chocolate Pu-erh, so I put it in when I was digging all the loose teabags out of my cupboard. :D
I had to actually buy this from a place in the States because this particual CS tea never showed up in my local stores. They were selling all the other holidays teas but not this one, oddly enough.
The smell…oh my god, the smell! The teabags smell like cookie batter that just had a bunch of fresh citrus zest grated into it – it made me want to eat the teabag instead of steep it! Then, when the water was added, it got even better, turning into the smell of just-baked sugar cookies, fresh out of the oven.
The flavour starts off tasting lightly citrusy and I got worried that that was going to be all there was to it, but then the sweet, sugar cookie goodness kicked in. I can literally taste the buttery, crumbly texture that you get when you take a bite of a cookie. This could easily become an addiction!
Preparation
@Lena, it disappeared from my shelves within the week after Christmas, so I think it’s definitely gone for the season. Should reappear in late November or so.. :(
@Ricky: Hey, I just sent you a bunch of stuff, you greedy-guts! ;-P
@LENA: I can spare a few bags if you want to trade – just PM me.
Yay for renewing your faith in this!=D
I love this gunpowder.. it has a spinachy but almost buttery quality to it
Yay for Adagio gunpowder. I agree, this wasn’t a bad gunpowder. I think the only reason I still had so much was that I got tired of it. No more gunpowder for me if I could help it.
Maybe I ought to give this one another try. The last time I steeped it I found it dried my mouth out a whole lot, though I didn’t dislike the flavor profile. I still have almost the whole sample left…I suppose it’s time to play with temperatures and steeping times!
