I’ve noticed since being out of work, the last 4 months, that tea hasn’t tasted as deep or amazing to me. Which is odd considering I have tried some really deep and amazing teas lately. So it got me wondering. If it is not the tea, then what? Is it my attitude? I really don’t think so. I am actually adjusting quite well. I am making plans for the future – something I haven’t done in years. It can’t be my brewing equipment since I brought it all home.

That leaves one thing unchecked. The water. I used tap water at work and had great tea. I am using tap water at home but it is a different source. I have always complained of microwaved water at home – maybe it is not just the microwave. So I am using bottled water today.

Unfortunately after that long introduction, I can’t yet determine if it made a big difference. I think I got the water too hot for this white / green blend – or just maybe I am going to have to adjust how I brew things. Wouldn’t that be fabulous. Leaving the rating alone because I can’t redo this cup as it is a sipdown.

My mother recently made me try a tea at home using bottled water. I don’t taste any difference between my tap water and bottled water but she does. I sure tasted the difference between the tea made with each and I didn’t like the one with bottled water! So, it could well be partly the fault of the water you got used to. Maybe it is also that tea used to be part of one routine and now it has to become part of another.

Our tap water and the office water come from two different water corporations. I don’t taste the difference but my water may just be enough harder to make flat tea. It will be another day or so before I will know. (Can’t seem to stay home long enough)

It’s possible that your palate has adjusted in pH or simply in taste due to your change in environment. As a former chef of a Mexican restaurant I noticed a similar change after I didn’t work there anymore; a lot of things (including tea) tasted more bitter because my mouth had been accustomed to alkaline, salty Mexican food and now was used to more vegetables etc..
Is it possible you’re having the same effect?

K S

Actually, I kind of hope so. That suggests I will eventually adjust. I thought at first it was stress, then allergies, now the water. I used to have a Brita somewhere. I need to dig in the back of the cabinet and see if I can find it.
