I have been studing the Breville 800 and Fine machines, Which one?
amazon reviews on the Fine machine were somewhat negative. I was going to buy the Breville but I am a little concerned about the top of the tea basket. It looks to be plastic and I don’t think I want to brew plastic with my tea. I want all glass or ceramic. Am I being ridiculous?
Thanks, Fred
I recently purchased the Breville One-touch and am very pleased with it. The top of the basket us plastic but my previous primary brewing vessel was a Teavana Perfect Tea Maker, which is all plastic. I have not experienced anything funky due to the plastic. I ordered mine from American Tea Room and got free shipping and they even threw in a couple tea samples with my order.
I got the One-Touch as a birthday present. I’ve used it at least 3-4 times a day (sometimes much, much more). Like Laura said, the only plastic bit is the lid to the brew basket. There’s no strange, plasticy taste at all in any of the tea I’ve brewed.
I did flip through the owner’s manual and the website to see if the type of plastic was listed, but did not find it in either, and the lid itself has no plastic identifiers. It does appear to be quite heat-safe, and has been cool to the touch anytime I’ve handled it (including the time I took it out as soon as the tea was finished and managed to get a small burn from the stainless steel basket).
If you’re worried about your tea tasting funny, it’s definitely not an issue. If you’re worried about the plastic for other reasons (chemical leaching), I’d contact the company and ask what type of plastic it is and go from there.
As for me, it’s the best birthday present I’ve ever gotten. And that’s including the Strawberry Shortcake house when I was 3.
does the breville work well if you only want to brew a few cups? Do you prefer using it over a regular teapot?
Thanks!
Susan
I mostly use it to make 2 cups at a time. I like switching up what tea I’m drinking often. The smallest amount you can brew is 500 ml (little over 16 ounces), and it does that wonderfully.
I do prefer using it compared to my regular teapot. When I’d use my teapot, I often ended up oversteeping, even when using a timer. There’s no worry of that with the One-Touch. The basket’s also been much easier to clean out than my other brew baskets have been.
And the auto-start is just wonderful. I can’t tell you how many pots of tea I’ve ruined because I’ve sat on the couch and fallen back to sleep. Now, I set it for about 5 minutes before I need to be awake, and ta-da, there is tea and it is good.
I may break down and get one. I like my teapots but this sounds very attractive. A trip to Williams Sonoma is in order…
I broke down and bought the Breville today. Have used it once. I am VERY PLEASED. It doesn’t have the pizazz of using my cute teapots for my tea but you can’t beat it for convenience and turning out a super cup of tea.
This morning I actually did oversteep my tea by accident (before getting the Breville) so I am sure this will prevent such accidents in the future!
