Matcha Latte
Hey guys, planning to make matcha latte for the first time in the near future – any tips or tricks my fellow Steepsters would care to pass on? Thanks in advance!
Depending on how you’re doing it, I use a milk frother and like to throw the matcha right in with the milk. I’ve found that it’s the best way to make sure that it is mixed all of the way.
For an iced matcha latte, I like to let the matcha “steep” in the milk overnight, and then shake it up real good and drink! For hot, just whisking seems to work fine :)
Are you planning to sweeten the latte?
Wow, I must be really lazy. I throw some milk (almond, soy or reg.) in one of those mini-blenders, throw in some matcha and some stevia or flavoring and let it blend away. I then pour it over ice. Yummmmmm……
Don’t feel bad. That’s exactly how I make it (when I do it cold). For hot, I microwave the milk to less than boiling and then dump in flavored matcha mixed with 2 oz water. For some reason, it doesn’t need much sweetener when I drink it hot, but needs a lot cold; I find this is also true of coffee lattes.
I usually use 1tsp or so for a 24 oz cup. But I also take my matcha and make a matcha paste before adding it in the blender with the other ingredients. Basically how you would start making a normal matcha tea but less water. I blend my matcha concentrate with soy milk, ice, sugar and vanilla.
Skysamurai I use a normal blender. I’m sure you could use a hand blender.
The last time I had a matcha latte was in the Japanese Tea Gardens in SF. One day, I’ll learn to make them at home.
As mentioned, I also like to use a milk frother and depending if I want it “drier,” I froth milk in a separate cup, then spoon the froth into the blended matcha.
I like the Aerolatte milk frother that comes with a travel case http://ow.ly/BHlHQ. There are less expensive ones at IKEA (without case) that work just as well!
