Flavored matchas - what's your favorite? Seeking recommendations.

Cofftea, you’ll be delighted to know I’m converted to the Matcha Fan Club :D I’ve been having fun with Lupicia’s flavored matchas, but I’d like to further expand my options. So please share your favorite flavored matchas, and warn me away from bad ones :-)

I haven’t tried Lupicia’s… so I don’t know that I can compare any from what you’ve already tried. Since Lupicia’s is a matcha latte mix, I would suggest trying Domo’s, they have chocolate, vanilla and ginger. I’ve tried the chocolate, and I have the vanilla, I just haven’t yet tried it.

Art of Tea has a ginger matcha that isn’t a latte mix… so it’s going to be a little different. If you like ginger, it’s pretty good. I’ve found it’s better in hot liquids than it is in cold (such as for smoothies) because there are chunks of ginger (tiny chunks, but still, they are chunks) and in the hot liquid they have a chance to soften a bit better than in the cold.

I like Matcha Lychee from Teaopia. This, again, is not a latte mix.

I think, though, my favorite so far has been the Mandarin Matcha from 52Teas… but that is no longer available. I would recommend watching 52Teas for their weekly announcements, and seeing what Frank comes up with next as far as Matcha – he did promise us another one soon. :)

52 Teas’ Mandarin Matcha definitely seems to be the most widely acclaimed, but as you say he’s out :(

Art of Tea’s Ginger Matcha is organic as well- YAY!

52teas strawberry matcha was awesome as well. I was terrified the flavor would be too delicate to stand up to orange juice, but shockingly it isn’t! And the flavor balances well when made w/ water as well. I have not tried any of the suggestions here, other than from 52teas, but they all sound WONDERFUL! I do not like dairy w/ my matcha so I suspect I will like all flavored matchas more than matcha latte mixes (even if I just add water, which I fully entend to do, because some of Lupicia’s contain milk)… except for that Domo (Which means “thank you” in Japanese- thank you Full House lol!) Chocolate. I MUST try that. But I think that’ll still be a way for me to rationalize having chocolate daily rather than having a bowla matcha.

Suzi, I think you should add “GIVE US MORE MATCHA FRANK!” to the subject line of this thread so he sees it:)

I have been really wanting to try some Matcha… Where is a good place to start?

Cofftea said

Since this thread already has a lot of flavored matcha ideas, I’m assuming you mean plain, unflavored matcha… correct? Well, I’ve never met a matcha I didn’t like but if you’re looking for something budget friendly, I’d like to stear you toward Lupicia- their most economical matcha is $15/100g. It isn’t the most earth moving matcha I’ve ever had, but it is SO much better than the price leads you to believe it would be and is an excellent option for a poor person such as ourselves who NEED matcha on a daily basis (at least I drink it daily lol) or a matcha newbie who is leary about a large financial investment- although it is a large amount. While I’ve never met a matcha I didn’t like and don’t have a fine enough palate to say “x brand is better than y brand”, I will say that some matchas need to be sifted to be enjoyed at its best. I’ve also found that organic is best which is another reason I can’t wait to try AoT’s ginger matcha. There are several matcha threads here. I hope you can find the info you’re looking for:)

I was going to say Lupicia’s matcha :)

I like them because they aren’t bitter. It’s great for lattes, well cause it’s meant for lattes. Frank’s matcha is different from Lupicia. Frank’s matcha resembles standard matchas a lot more. Oh bitterness! Still great matcha :)

Cofftea said

Amount of bitterness is all in the matcha/water ratio though.

Ricky said

Agreed, but it’s harder to get wrong with Lupicia :)

I DID see this, and I am working on some new matchas. In the meantime…

We did a bit of reorganizing since Chelsea left us, and we found a little stockpile of teas that she hadn’t pouched up. I’m updating the website. We have 10 extra pouches of Strawberry Matcha. Get them while you can! http://www.52teas.com/2010/03/30/strawberry-matcha/

Cofftea said

Frank, I’m not sure if you’ve noticed but we’ve been drinking matcha lemon and limeades like crazy- both with your and unflavored matchas. How about a lemon, lime, or lemon-lime matcha? Strawberry or raspberry lemon or lime would be great combos as well. Also, since not all of your 52teas permanent stock is made up of blends (you have stevia), would it be possible for you to sell your unflavored matcha base? Or put it on zoomdweebies.com at least?

-Jessica- said

Frank!!! Thank you! I have never tried your matchas before, but I just placed an order and I can’t wait! Flavored matchas are my new “thing” now, so I have been searching for different flavors and what not.

I think Cofftea is on to something…a strawberry lime matcha would probably remind me of a Strawberry Limeaid from Sonic! Or Cherry or Raspberry Lime would be good too! Ooooh the possibilities! :-D

Cofftea said

Or better yet- a blackberry blend! (As good as the strawberry one was, I don’t really care for strawberries that much- blackberries are my fave followed by raspberries)

Well, I’ve got several I am working on, but sadly, none of the ones you guys mentioned. LOL. I have some supplies arriving TODAY to make at least one of the following for starters: Cranberry (with real 100% dried cranberry juice), apple (with 100% dried apple powder), and/or banana with freeze-dried banana powder. I ordered this stuff over a month ago, but I will keep an eye out for items I could use to make the blends you suggested.

Cofftea said

Banana is the only one that sounds icky to me- but if you blend it, I’ll still buy it:) Cranberry would be my favorite I think… unless it’s sour apple matcha… please, please, pretty please:) And what’s w/ this “or”… and! hehe;)

“and/or” as in, maybe cran-apple?

Cofftea said

Gotcha. My only concern is cranberry and matcha are both strong flavors. Do you think the apple would be ballsy enough? I know that I can never distinguish the apple in cran apple juice so I’m not sure if even you could make the apple stick out when adding matcha lol

Suzi said

I look forward to seeing your future creations, Frank :D

The banana matcha sounds like it would be good to me! Ooooh exciting! :-D

Frank @ 52teas just confirmed he’s coming out w/ banana, cranberry, and apple matchas. They should be out this week!

LENA said

Cranberry wins my vote and future order.

Cofftea said

I’m probably gonna buy all 3 even though I don’t like banana. May make that one w/ pineapple juice.

And, they are POSTED! http://www.52teas.com

Just wanted to add: (Expletive!) Frank! Why do you do this to me?

Trust me, you WON’T be disappointed in these. I sourced some really good stuff for these. Some things I didn’t even know existed (like spray-dried cranberry juice: They take 100% pure cranberry juice and spray it in a fine mist around a cylinder, then let it dry and scrape the resulting powder off. Really, who knew this existed?) Some of these items are not cheap, but they are soooo worth it.

alright, alright, you don’t have to sell me on them, I’ve already ordered them. UGH. That… is why I curse you. LOL

What about watermelon Matcha?

Maybe next time. We’re out of Matcha for now.

Suzi said

They look really great, Frank! At first I had a bit of sticker shock – $18.99 is quite a jump from $7.99 Strawberry Matcha – but then I realized it’s 2ozs instead of 1oz. Placing order now!

Watermelon poses an interesting problem. I always like to put real fruit pieces, etc in my blends, but I can’t find dried or freeze-dried watermelon anywhere.

Yes, they are 2oz. pouches, and my costs did go up pretty steeply here recently.

OK… I have an interesting flavor… but I’m totally serious about it. How about tomato and basil. Maybe not with a Matcha. but… for a green tea. Maybe with some black pepper. :)

Suzi said

Oooo, a savory tea :) We can always use more of those!

Cofftea said

LiberTEAS- actually I can totally see that as a matcha flavor. I put matcha in my tomate basil as well as roasted red pepper soups. Maybe a bloody mary matcha?

Janefan said

I would love to try a savory tomato basil black pepper green tea!

Cofftea said

OH CRAP. These are expensive… And I was going to buy 2 for me and all 3 for my best friend… shoot.

I think these are still a really good deal, with (as always) shipping included. My cost on the matcha went up about 25% since the last time I ordered, not to mention the cost of the add-ins.

Cofftea said

Me thinks you need a new matcha supplier then… for that price it should at least be organic:) …And these ARE a good deal, but my wallet is not used to me ordering 10oz of matcha at once! lol

@Cofftea – with all due respect, me thinks you should at least become a tea retailer before you make that kind of statement … it’s pretty bold of you to say that he needs a new supplier just because it doesn’t fit into your idea of what is affordable. His prices are very good for flavored matcha. (Edited to add: and that is based upon my personal experience as a tea retailer)

Cofftea said

LiberTEAS, the only reason I said that was because Frank said, My cost on the matcha went up about 25% since the last time I ordered, not to mention the cost of the add-ins." which made it sound like the cost of the base matcha itself suddenly went up as well as the “schtuf” (lol) in the matcha so I thought maybe there would be another source he could get the base matcha from so he would have more $ to play around w/ add ins. That was all I ment.

Over the last couple of years, demand for Matcha has exploded and I am sure that supplier’s increase in price is a reflection of that increased demand. If you can find a flavored matcha that retails for less than $9.50 per ounce including shipping I’d be quite impressed. Even more so if it is organic.

Cofftea said

True LiberTEAS. I meant if it was just that one particular supplier vs. all. If all suppliers have increased their prices then of course prices are going to increase on Frank’s end.

Cofftea said

OK… I have officially and MASSIVELY caved. 2 complete sets- one for me (yes… I got the banana even though I cringe and how I expect it to taste… I just keep thinking banana Runtz) and one for my best friend who I’m sure will share w/ her roommate and boyfriend. I don’t know what I’m more shocked about… the fact that I just bought 12oz of matcha (and 6 for me!) or the fact that I just spent $113.94 on tea (unfortunately the STEEPSTER code is no longer active for $1 off orders)… the last time I spent even remotely that much was when I bought 1 pound of Mayan Chocolate Chai on ManTeas. The one time investment is a huge, but at $9.50/oz and 34 cents/g it’s a great value… and my best friend is SO worth it.

@Cofftea – having tasted a couple of Frank’s banana teas (Banana Peach green and Chocolate Banana Rooibos come to mind immediately) I really look forward to trying the Banana, in fact, I think that one will probably be my favorite of the three.

Cofftea said

I’m leary because the only banana flavored thing I like is actual bananas. I’m sure it will be a very good banana matcha, the question is will it be something that is of my personal tastes.

@Cofftea, this has real banana powder (pulverized, freeze-dried bananas). I think you will like it.

@LiberTEAS, have you tried the Monkey Fart yet? It is VERY popular here at the shop, though one of the kids just ordered a Radioactive Monkey Fart (RadioactiviTEA blended with Monkey Fart), which I can’t imagine was good, but who knows?

Cofftea said

As much as I think Monkey Fart is a disgusting name I nearly fell off the couch laughing at Radioactive Monkey Fart. That’s awesome.

@52Teas I haven’t yet tried the Monkey Fart. I will probably open the package tonight. I am not sure about a Radioactive Monkey Fart though… and I’m really glad that you didn’t call Chelsea’s chocolate banana rooibos a chocolate monkey fart.

@LiberTEAS, oh SURENOW give me the great name ideas!

@52Teas, I can’t begin to tell you how irritated I would be with one of my favorite FAVORITE favorite teas being called chocolate monkey fart. You don’t really understand the man I live with that the judge said is mine for better or worse. I probably would have no problem with it otherwise, but with him in the house, I have to hide anything remotely connected with the word Fart (he has even managed to connect ART and fart) because he has this err … um … “charming” (please note that this word is in quotation marks, I have done so for a reason) child-like obsession with farts.

sigh

He does have appealing qualities as well. Really. He does.

Cofftea said

I agree w/ LiberTEAS. For me it would kinda be like seeing something REALLY nasty on tv while eating or drinking something you REALLY love… only every single time.

I think that a watermelon Matcha would be good too! :)

Oh yes! Watermelon Mint?:)

I would suggest something sweet and creamy maybe with caramel. I am thinking rich and smooth maybe a little bold but not fruity. Just a thought. Also, something a little stranger maybe a… “Caramel Matcha Macchiato” you love the unusually and clearly we do as well so why not a coffee and matcha blend with caramel and cream…just my two cents.

That sounds strangely delicious!

Thank you…I feel the same way and the more I think about it the more I want it. It is scary.

Suzi said

I know Lupicia has a caramel matcha latte mix. It’s yummy <3

Thanks, that is good to know :-) Now if Frank can combine with coffee for his version it would be awesome. Oh and maybe some whipped cream. LOL, I think I am craving a sundae. OMG! A Whipped Caramel Matcha Sundae. That’s it I need dessert.

Cofftea said

lol! No Rachel, I think you need to breathe! HAHA!

Cofftea you will be happy to know that my hubby agrees with you. :-)

Cofftea said

LOL! I said that because I have adult onset ADHD so can, and do, convey my excitement/hyperness VERY well in written word so seeing someone convey their excitement/passion over something that well cracks me up. Tea (especially flavored matchas) is a good thing to get that jazzed about though!:)
