Teaware lust?
OMG, these kit-tea pets are so cute. Very tempting. Those cute little smiles!
After much research & thought I indulged and ordered an Ru Kiln traditional gaiwan. I understand from Brenden that this type of teaware provides greater heat-retention (especially helpful for what we drink – black & Puerh tea). I also found the insulated finger grips to be quite appealing. Lastly, the 9 cm diameter is a better fit for my hands than the 10 cm gaiwan I originally purchased.

A little small for my usual style of drinking but it’s on sale and I love the glazingHigh Temperature Burning Handmade 30ml Lotus Ceramic Teacup Gift Jingdezhen China Kungfu Tea Cup Mug Porcelain Ceramics Craft

That’s beautiful. Have those if you who order from AliExpress been ok as far as credit card info? I keep making orders there and not going through with them when I remember I have to give my card info to a site based in a country known for hackers. :( Do you use some other method to pay? Or do you just not worry about it?
I’ve personally never had a problem. You can also pay by debit if you have a visa enabled card. They have a system called alipay which is meant to be a version of PayPal but I don’t know anyone who used it. All my transactions have been processed in the UK.
Hahaha! I completely relate!
This is my expensive windowed tea-lust: http://www.amazon.com/Grade-Ancients-Chinese-Ceramic-Gaiwan/dp/B00MKY2PDY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1440374466&sr=8-1&keywords=ceramic+ancient+tea+gaiwan
BEHOLD! The most beautiful and crafty in traditional ancient teaware. REVEL MORTALS! I’ll probably NEVER buy it. :D
I felt the same way. I figured that I would use it for several people, or if it’s just tea for too, I would use half the leaf and double the steeping length. Pretty much works perfectly divided that way, depending on the tea. Anyway, only good for at least two people.
i sorta remember this being called by another name other than gaiwan…if it is a gaiwan! (looks like the burn free gaiwan on ebay)
ok so i looked it up and it’s called shiboridashi and it sorta looks like this http://verdanttea.com/teas/fish-pond-pattern-all-in-one-gaiwan-set/ minus the cup on top and mine has a handle (the handle of the other one had broken off so i got a discount!)
I asked you if it was easy gaiwan. it doesnt look like shiboridashi. It looks more like hybrid easy gaiwan
An easy gaiwan refers to the fact that it is easy to pour because of a built in spout. You don’t need to prop up the lid to pour.
Agree with Allan. your pots are not shiboridashi. this is some example of shibo

Here’s a really casual, inexpensive houhin/shibo that I use sometimes.

It was very affordable.
Seller on Amazon that always has them. The seller has two different houhins listed for the same price, but they are more than likely just selling the same pattern, which is the pattern that I and the customer reviewer received, and not the patterns shown. But, who knows what you receive with item #1? If one doesn’t like the design, it can be returned/replaced.
One other thing is, my lid and his lid both don’t fit perfectly snug on the inner rim, which is not typical for a tea bowl like this. However, as he pointed out, it really doesn’t affect the brewing or pouring whatsoever, so this is just a quirk.
It is coated clay so it stays very hot, 130 ml, wide brim to allow easy and burn-free handling, the dark pattern also gives the infusing liquor a deep ambiance. Not the best houhin bowl, but smaller than most, very durable, and rather inexpensive. I expect mine to last a lifetime, as I’ve dropped it a few times. The reason I like it so much is because it is very easy to drink directly from the bowl, using the spout as a mouthpiece. Suddenly, the tea bowl becomes a Western-sized teacup, but with strong gongfu tea inside. Good for all teas, but not ideal for green teas.
Just ignore the ridiculous claims that it is “yixing” clay. It is finished so there is no porousness or roughness. They call everything “yixing.”

I have seen the design houhin before on other websites, but I cannot remember where—xxxxxxx… Here are some closeups of the one that we received:
Thick, keeps hot, some holes if you want to flow quickly or not.

It looks rather voluminous for a small teapot. Definitely at least for two people, or for one-serving-one-steeping.
Somebody stop me! It’s too cute and cheap!
