tin addicted - favorite stackable tins?
I’m pretty addicted to David’s Tea stackable tins — so much so that I am considering ordering a tea with sulphites (Green & Fruity) even though I do not want to ingest sulphites, just so I can have the cute colored mini tin.
My cabinet space is tight, so the more I can put in little tins & stuff the big bags elsewhere, the better.
What are your favorite tin sources? I like that the DT ones really stay in place. My bigger DT tins want to avalanche each time I open the cabinet.
Thanks!
I wish I had a favorite! I’ve literally been hemming and hawing about whether I should buy the davids tins for the last week. I think I might just drop by a store and stock up on black teas this weekend, to save on shipping.
So far I have two pretty nice tins from tealux, for from harney and sons (two 8oz two 4oz) and a ton of 4oz mason hard which I’m not all to happy with. I’m looking for smaller, quality tins for samples too.
I forgot to mention my other addiction: David’s tea sample tins — like the ones that come in the trio boxes, or the sampler ones. I put all sorts of things in those once I’m done. But the trio-sized tins are handy for tight storage. They don’t click into place like the little $5 filled David’s ones, though.
I ordered Teavana’s 12 days of Christmas promo box last Christmas (ahem, several) because I googled it and the previous year it had 12 cute little tins in it. But they cheaped out last year and just included a couple of bigger tins and the rest were in foil packs. The packaging was impressive overall, like a little secretary desk, but I was in it for the tins, so it was disappointing.
I found these!

I’m not sure what twist plug means. Would say the davids tea stackable sample twins are twist plug? You mentioned that they click into place. The 5$ not the trio so cute! I’m not actually interested in their teas themselves -oddly enough, this is a tea shop I think I’d have to visit in person to be convinced enough to actually buy – but their tins are so pretty and seem like good quality for the price.
I have those tealux ones! I bought them for matcha – by twistlug I guess they just mean twist to seal? It seals tight enough that my matcha stays fresh! I wish they were actually stackable as well because they’re a decent size…
Omg Lolita tins by Denise Farinsky! http://farinskyartstudio.blogspot.com/2014/02/japanese-lolita-fashion-tea-tins-for.html
I’ve been looking at these ones from Specialty Bottle, but I haven’t ordered them yet.

I really like the ones that The Tea Spot has.
When we redesigned our kitchen several years ago, I reserved a shallow drawer just for teas (since I do almost all of the cooking, my wife could make no objection to how I wanted to use the space). I went to the Container Store and found these boxes that seal closed with a large click button on the top (http://www.containerstore.com/shop?productId=10029681&N=&Nao=60&Ntt=box+spring+loaded+lid). A 125 gm bag of most teas fits perfectly into them. These boxes also stack nicely, which is great because my tea collection has expanded far beyond that drawer. For my small sample envelopes, I got a small chest of drawers (I don’t see it on their website) that I labeled Indian, Chinese, etc. Inserts divide each drawer into quarters so I subdivide by oolong, pu-ehr, etc.
True, but since I keep them in a closed drawer or cupboard, I’m not too worried about them fading in the light.
Your approach is similar to mine. I have about 3 drawers set aside for tea. Each drawer is 5 inches high inside, so I went about trying to maximize my use of the space and fell in love with these little clear containers from the container store http://www.containerstore.com/shop/kitchen/foodStorage/canisters?productId=10018275&N=74062. They are 2-5/8″ × 3″ × 4-3/4" h, which fits perfectly. They seal really well and are high quality clear cases. Clear doesn’t bother me because they are protected from light by being in a cabinet, and I can inspect my tea without unsealing them so the tea lasts longer. They seal so well, that I’ve had teas stay fresh tasting for years in them. My main problem is that I’ve also expanded beyond the drawers… what to do.
I also have a small quantity of Rishi canisters that I purchased from Wegman’s. (https://www.rishi-tea.com/product/black-finish-tea-tin/tea-storage) They stack well and seal really well because of the double closure top, but being round makes them less space efficient.
If anyone finds a great source of inexpensive tins without insane shipping costs, please post a link! I’m looking for smaller sizes, especially.
I remember reading about small round tins from Upton when I was browsing TeaChat. I don’t know if they stack though. They come in a big pack!!
In addition to the larger tins I bought during the recent David’s sale, I also ordered 3 of the stacking tins of the Long Life Oolong JUST to get that size of stacking tin. I have no idea if I will even like the tea. I also saw at World Market, a stacked up bunch of small tins with various teas that don’t sound like something I want. But – it’s $6.99 for five tins of tea or so and I might get those just to have some more that size.

I see this exact tea sampler at my local Marshall’s and tjmaxx year round. I actually saw it the other day when I was picking up mugs! I would have honestly gotten it for the tins alone but I can’t bring myself to waste tea. Chai isn’t as popular in our house as it used to be. It would just go waste.
I like the idea of these uline tins: http://www.uline.ca/BL_5648/Deep-Metal-Tins?keywords=tin
You have to buy them buy the case, which sucks, but for $31 you get 48 which is much cheaper than what I’ve seen anywhere else! And 2 oz is a nice size. I’m considering it! Then I can get magnetic tape so I can label the sides with what is inside!
They also have resealable aluminum bags for swapping http://www.uline.ca/BL_57/No-Print-Static-Shielding-Bags-Reclosable?keywords=Aluminum%20Foil%20Bag
OMG VariaTEA, I was looking at their site earlier, but I totally didn’t see those. PERFECT. Time to save up for tins and bags. :)
Edit: Oh wait. These are the ones I was looking at, but 1000 bags? Umm.

I love all of the Harney & Sons HT and Historic Palace tins—both the design and the colors. And they do stack well…
The Tazo whole-leaf sachet tins are very sleek and beautiful once the labels are removed. They are also generously sized—perfect for stowing envelopes of loose-leaf tea.
I just got the ones from Adagio and I have to say: I love them. I really do.
The sky blue color is not really “sky blue”. It’s really closer to “electric blue” than sky to me. It’s PERFECT blue. Same color as my hair. :) I adore it.
And they are just the right size, and a good price for the small and the large. :) I got 3 large and 6 small recently and they’re just awesome. :)
