Looking for something similar to Lady Grey
Hello all, I’m looking for some suggestions for a citrusy black tea. I love the flavors in Twinnings Lady Grey, but the base is a bit too light for my tastes. I’m looking for something with similar orange, bergamot and lemon notes but not quite as light.
Also, if you have any recommendations for just an orange tea I would appreciate them.
Thanks :)
I liked the “Blood Orange Pu’erh” from DAVIDs TEA. It’s a rich, not tart, blood-orange flavour, and the pu’erh is quite dark and earthy, which is heavier than Lady Grey. No bergamot in it, though. They say it has hibiscus and citrus extracts and licorice root for a little sweetness. I never tasted the licorice, but the dark, earthy, orange…yes!
Anastasia, from Kusmi. I haven’t had Lady Grey in a while, so I can’t remember how the base is in comparison (and I don’t believe it’s ever detailed anywhere), but Anastasia is a China-Ceylon black blend, with bergamot, lemon, lime and orange. I quite like the little zing the lime gives it.
I second the vote for Anastasia. Troika from Kusmi would also be good if you want more of an orange flavor (it’s black tea with bergamot, orange, and mandarin).
Awesome, thank you. I’ve never heard of that company but they have some wonderful looking flavors. Too bad they don’t sell samples. Maybe I’ll pick up one of their mini tin sets.
Yeah, the closest you’ll get to a sample is their 1oz tins, but they only sell those in sets on their site (I believe). They wholesale out though and some independent tea shops sell the 1oz tins individually.
Kusmi uses earl grey as a base for almost all of their teas, so there’s a bit of bergamot zest in most of their blends.
If you can’t find something a bit more to your tastes, you could always try adding a bit more leaf or time (depending on your preferences). Another option is to add a bit of a strong black tea to increase the base strength. With all these ideas you might need to watch out for bitterness, but depending on how you like your tea, that might not be an issue.
Betjeman and Barton have several options. You can order them in Canada through phone order from Montreal if you go here http://www.betjemanandbarton.com/en/content/9-world

Hmmm, I haven’t found a loose tea I would compare, but Trader Joe’s Duchess Grey is comparable. I haven’t even had Lady Grey in my cupboard for awhile though so I can’t compare the bases, sorry.
