Favorite Tea for Comfort

I broke up with the man I thought I was going to spend the rest of my life with last night, and have clearly been suffering from all the normal breakup crap. I was with him nearly four years, we were moving in together in a couple months, and I moved up to where I live now because his PhD program was here. I find myself now having broken up with my entire network of friends, which is seriously overwhelming.

So, as can be expected at this point, I don’t feel like eating really. Or drinking, or all of the things that come with a huge life event. Except tea. For me, so far, the only appealing thing to drink is a cup of super spicy chai. It made me wonder, does anyone else have a certain tea they reach for when they just need comfort?

So sorry to hear that. I can only imagine that a breakup that big might almost feel like mourning a late loved one. As far as tea goes, I find grain teas like sobacha (buckwheat tea) and genmaicha (I substitute green rooibos for green tea in mine) to be most comforting. A really nice chamomile or lavender tea could also bring a feeling of calm. Anyway, I hope you feel better soon and I’ll keep you in my prayers.

Thank you – it is one of those things where I am heartbroken, but not sorry. Life, you know? I appreciate your thoughts

I tend to reach for Earl Greys when I need comfort. Earl Grey Cream from Zen Tea is my all time favorite, but I find most EGs comforting. When I’m feeling tense and need to relax I reach for Manistee Moonrise from Whispering Pines. I find it impossible to be tense when drinking that tea.

I’m sorry about your break up. I can’t imagine how hard that must be. Good luck on your doctorate, and I hope you find a great support system in your new town!

I will have to look into those! Thank you for your kind words – I am not getting a doctorate (I am in a teacher certification program here though, and am in this town for another year at minimum). Making new friends is hard, but it is not impossible, and I have more motivation than ever now!

Oops! Sorry, I misread your initial post. Regardless, good luck! Making new friends can be tough, but I hope some amazing and kind people cross your path. :)

Sorry to hear about the relationship bust. Especially after all that time, I can’t imagine what that must be like. But it’ll get better. Life just likes her little curveballs.
For me it depends on what I need comfort from. If it’s a hard day at work, I’ll treat myself and relax with one of my fancy/more expensive teas (which is usually my Caramel Vanilla Assam). If it’s just a general ’I’m feeling rotten/depressed/what-have-you’ I might reach for one of my chai-ish blends with some milk or just something that I know I like instead of my usual ‘take a chance’ tea picking. But mostly drinking tea generally helps me unwind no matter what the brew.

So sorry to hear about your breakup. As tough as it might be at this time keep a look out for opening doors. Your life will probably start moving in a new direction.

During these times, the best cup of tea is a cup of tea shared. If you have any family member you can share a tea with, please do. For me, I like anything Earl Grey when I’m feeling low but the most important thing is just sharing a tea.

My comfort tea is the teas I liked when I was kid/teen. (Bigelow’s Constant Comment, Mint Medley, Chamomile Comfort,Perfect Peach.)
Though nearly any tea that I like from my cupboard can be a comfort.
