Need orchid oolong help!

A long time ago, Verdant Tea was selling Orchid Oolong. They no longer sell it. I have been searching for a couple of years trying to find one like it to no avail. I have bought many teas which sound like they will be similar, hoping they will be – the descriptions might say they taste “candy-like” or sweet or orchid-y – but none have come close to comparing to that Taiwanese Orchid Oolong that Verdant once sold which had a distinct lilac-candy flavor.

I hope someone out there can direct me to a place that sells a very similar tea. I can’t get that tea out of my head. I can still taste it even though it’s been years since I had it!
Thanks!

It could be the orchid dan cong oolong… many tea shops offer this oolong. Try JK tea shop.

Actually it was an orchid high mountain oolong, so green and rolled.

I haven’t tried it (and it is a Tieguanyin instead of a Taiwanese high mountain oolong) but I would check out Golden Moon’s Orchid Temple Oolong.

Art of Tea has an Orchid Oolong that is Taiwanese and might be similar.

I think that these teas are sometimes sold under the name Jade oolong, so you could look into those as well.

Golden Moon Teas has an Orchid Temple Oolong….it’s a good, green oolong, full scent in the leaf, the cup, and a great flavor.

Thanks so much for the replies! Much appreciated!

I will check out Golden Moon’s Orchid Temple Oolong. Thanks to both of you for the suggestion.

I’ve tried Art of Tea’s Orchid Oolong which seemed pretty mild compared to VT’s. I’m drinking a dong ding from Tea of Taiwan right now and it’s closer in taste and after-taste to the Orchid Oolong I had from VT. But it is still mild, yet not as mild as AoT’s.

I’m looking forward to trying the tea from Golden Moon!

Sammerz, thanks for the suggestion. I’ll try JK out, too.

I can’t seem to get into Golden Moon’s website. Anyone else have this problem?

I recall a while back there was a guy from…err…Denmark? He was selling Taiwanese tea from his home. He has a blog. Not much else I remember… does this ring a bell to anyone? I am trying to find him again with the hope he might sell me a good Orchid Oolong…

If you haven’t tried this one yet, Da Yu Ling Oolong from Butiki has amazing distinct lilac and orchid notes, it’s very sweet, creamy and buttery. Absolutely one of my favourite oolong ever, might be the type you are looking for. See description:

http://www.butikiteas.com/Oolong.html

«Our exceptional Da Yu Ling originates from the mountain where the Nantou, Thaizhong, and Hualien counties intersect in Central Taiwan at an elevation of approximately 8,500 feet. Da Yu Ling Oolong utilizes the Ching Xin (Tender Heart) varietal and is oxidized between 15-25%. This first flush winter harvest tea is remarkably sweet, buttery, and refreshing. Incredibly fresh orchid and lilac notes mingle with Bosc pear and spinach notes followed by light spearmint notes that linger.»

Wow. Sounds great! I’ll get it right away. Thanks so much!

Edit: Just bought 4 oz. It looks very similar to the one I am talking about – so fingers crossed. The ones I’ve been trying are too floral. The “creamy” and “buttery” notes sound promising. Thanks again!

Wow! you really took a leap of faith there, lol! As soon as I read your post I thought about this one, I don’t think it’s that much of a risk cause even if not exactly what you’re looking for, you will enjoy it :-) Let us know later!

P.S. I forgot to ask, have you ever tried Baozhong Pouchong? It’s an even greener oolong, also from taiwan with strong orchid notes. It’s my second favourite oolong. I buy wenshan baozhong from tealux, it’s a permanent in my collection:
