Tea Disaster Stories

We all love tea. That is why we are here. But with good things also comes some… disasters. Whether it’s hilarious, a tear-jerker, or something that makes you want to throw your cup across the room we want to hear it!

Share your tea disaster stories with us. Or just tea stories if it’s not really a disaster and you just want to share.

Here is mine:
1. We just completed a zoom talking about matcha (beingtea.com) when people began to show off their bowls. I grabbed mine excited to share completely forgetting I had water in it. About a 1/4 cup of water spilled on my surface keyboard. I immediately patted it down, flipped it upside down, lightly tapped it to get water out, and then let it dry in the sun. The next day it was all sorts of messed up. Now a week or so later it seems to be working just fine.

2. Drinking tea from Nepal Tea and I set my nice glass cup in a stupid place. I elbowed it off the counter and it shattered like a glass slipper. Always put your cup way in front of you…

Ooooo! I like this topic idea! File this one under the “Trying to Introduce the Unenlightened to Fine Tea” sub-category.

It was a lovely, crisp fall evening, and I was with a couple of friends in a beautiful outdoor setting by a fire pit. I’m gaiwan-ing my heart out, serving them some Golden Beautiful Eyebrow – a nice one, from Silver Needle. One friend was so focused on tending the fire that I had to remind him to sip his tea before it got cold. Which it did – every infusion. The other one merely responded to her cup with “It’s fine. Tastes like tea.”

Never again with these two.

Great topic! Tea seems to be attracted to keyboards. Many years ago, I spilled almost an entire cup of (not very good) green tea on my keyboard and had to replace it. Fortunately, it was a USB keyboard and not part of a laptop.

Another time, I mistakenly steeped a green tea in boiling water, though it didn’t taste too bad. (Why do these things always seem to happen with green tea?)

My worst tea disaster had to do with a beautiful wood-fired teapot that I got on sale for 50% off. The first time I used it, cracks showed up in the body and tea started seeping through. I agonized for longer than necessary over whether I could have caused this, but smarter people than me on TeaForum said it was probably something wrong with the firing. Anyway, unless I have an extra $300 to $400 to spare, I won’t be getting another wood-fired pot anytime soon. (I did, however, get a red clay pot from the 1990s that works just fine.)

My latest disaster was when I chipped a nice < 1 year old tea pot on the lid but was still usable. But now I am forever reminded of my clumsy mistake of using the pot before I was fully awake.

I just couldn’t remember any, but today one happened to me! Luckily it wasn’t any expensive tea, but still it made me unhappy.

It is nothing much, but I just spilled over my 300 ml glass cup today with freshly prepared tea. Noone hurt, just a shame to have tea spilled over.

Martin, that’s happened to me, too. It always seems to be the first, usually best, steep, probably because I’m not fully awake when making it.

No epic story, but I recently broke one of my DavidsTea forest bubble teacups that I’ve had for years. It just slipped out of my hand when I was taking it from the drying rack to my tea area, so I didn’t lose any tea (which probably also made the cleanup easier). Knock on wood, I think this is the only tea vessel I’ve smashed in recent memory…

I don’t have a disaster to share, but this discussion reminds me of how tea is discovered, and it was always by accidents! Shennong discovered tea as a leaf fell in his kettle. Oolong and black tea was discovered, because tea was forgotten and left to wither! So accidents happen, and sometimes they have fortunate consequences :)

Amen to that! And here’s a cuppa to our future accidents that turn into amazing things!
