Buying tea online

Help! I’m a newly converted loose leaf tea freak and also a poor college student. Okay, not super poor – but 8$ per ounce is a bit much for me. Do any of you have good suggestions for more affordable tea online? I’ve bought from adagio and darlene’s tea port so far.

Harney & Sons has affordable samples, at the very least. And some of their teas run around $7 for 4 ounces. They also have some really pricey teas, too. :) But you can find reasonable prices there.

English Tea Store has very low prices (around $5 for 4 ounces) and some great teas—Dorian Grey, Lady Londonderry, and Long Island Strawberry are Steepster favorites. They also have very generous sample packs. H&S, as mentioned, has great prices on some fantastic blends. Adagio is also very cheap, though their flavors are hit & miss so you might want to look up reviews beforehand.

Wish I had seen this site before I bought a pound of their masala chai. The clove in it is a bit overpowering.

Oh, yeah, and Tropical Tea Co has cheap prices. Also a $1/ounce sale area. Plus, 40% off your first order. Their teas aren’t reviewed a lot here, but the ones that have been get just above average reviews.

If you’re willing to wait for it (about 3-4 weeks if you select free shipping, but its well worth the wait) Teavivre has awesome high quality teas and they’re not expensive.

Upton Teas also has some nicely priced teas.

Provide Teavivre with your Steepster name on their website by clicking on the free tea tasting activity button, and they will send free samples! I have probably gotten twenty generous samples so far at least.

This is totally self-serving but I have a lot of teas for resale – and I do combine shipping, and offer up free samples of my Adagio signature blends and my exclusive blends. Check out my shop: keenteathyme.teatra.de and email or PM me with questions: [email protected]

You do combine shipping?

Absolutely! The Tea Trade site doesn’t combine it automatically, which is annoying, but I just send invoices to customers through Paypal and handle it that way.

Oh! Because I had totally picked some things out, but when I got to check out and I saw that the shipping would cost more than the tea I changed my mind.

EnjoyingTea.com has a lot of things for around $6/4oz; I love Rishi, and some of their teas are only about $10-$15/4oz; also check out the Swaps thread, especially if you have a lot of a tea you don’t really like to share. I did quite a bit of swapping when I first discovered Steepster, and it was a great way to try teas from many different companies for just the price of postage.

You can try TaoBao(kinda cheap chinese online auction) but it needs some time trying to figure out how to buy from there. Sadly, I’ve no experience with it and all of my info sources are in Russian. You should try googling for taobao guide.

Teavivre is great – they do a free tasting activity and have excellent tea for good prices, totally worth ordering more.

I’m a big fan of Davids Tea, but that’s only good if you like blends and are up for 50 g at a time (online – in store you can get smaller amounts).

Red Leaf Tea does excellent falvoured matchas, but I find them very expensive. HOWEVER, they give credit for reviews, so once you’ve bought some it is less expensive to get more.

Della Terra Teas has good prices on their flavoured teas but you need to use more with many of their blends I find, so it’s not always a money saver.

Of course, I always like to suggest local brick and mortar stores, but they don’t always have the best quality. : ( Worth a try, at least!
