LUPICIA.com CLOSING - group order for people in the US?? No happy bags.
That is heartbreaking. I’m fairly positive that Lupicia.jp, like most .jp companies, will not ship outside of Japan. wails And there isn’t even any indication on their website that they are closing it down, I just got an e-mail about their New Years promo teas days ago!
I already promised today that I wouldn’t ask you to break your buy-ban, so I won’t even ask but if you change your mind for a couple favorites, I would understand. :D
I seriously have no place to put them. In my underwear drawer? Eww. Couldn’t come at a worse time. The ban is quite honestly a necessity. My apartment is tiny, and stuffed to absolute tea-capacity. (And my car repairs in December were over 1k… I mean, I really can’t buy tea right now). Goodbye, Lupicia. I loved you, and I am going to miss you. That is truly heartbreaking! I wouldn’t be so devastated if Japan wasn’t so awful about international shipping (I’ve tried to order otaku loot so many times, and always get shafted because the companies refuse to ship outside of Japan). I’d be willing to pay it to get Lupicia! I wonder if Yunomi would be willing to middle-man their teas, or if they’ll only do that for tea farms?
Seriously, couldn’t they just leave the website open, even if they have to close down the stores? Meh… it’s probably because the Hayward, CA store is running the US website. sobs like a petulant child
I know, I know. Please don’t feel you have to explain every time. Just say “NO” and I will remember why. :D
I didn’t know that store ran their US website, which would explain why the site is shutting down. They should definitely leave the site open, even if they close the stores!
Ya, the stock ships from the Hayward, CA location. I realize it wouldn’t be cost effective to ship from Hawaii, but what about the Texas location? They didn’t say anything about that shutting down, right? It seems like they should be posting something to their website about a foreseeable closure rather than sending about “buy our New Years teas!” if they are shutting down online sales… it’s downright weird… Nothing is on their Facebook or Twitter, either.
I’ve always wanted to try Lupicia this makes me so sad! I honestly have like no money right now as Winter quarter just started for me. Have any of you figured out approximately how much each person would pay depending on how things were split?
It all depends on what YOU want, like if only wanted 3 × 25grams you would pay whatever the half prices for those teas were and whatever shipping was to your door (if we make it to $60 as a group then shipping is free from Lupicia to whomever splits the teas). Like if you just wanted to try about 16 grams of some teas, then another person could buy the other 32 grams. $60 would be probably around 8-9 packages of 1.76 ounces. Am I making sense? prob not.
But if three people are fine with splitting a 1.76 ounce package that would be 16 grams per person. A good amount to sample a tea. Also, I’d really only want to do a group order if we make it to free shipping.
here is an example, if it makes more sense.
Earl Grey is $6.50 for 49 grams.
If three people want to split Earl Grey:
16 grams each for $2.16
If two people want to split Earl Grey:
24.5 grams each for $3.25
+whatever shipping would be from me to you
In some cases, if it’s a tea I really wanted and you only wanted to try 16grams, I’d probably buy the other 33grams. It just makes sense to do a group order if many people want the same teas, but not entire 50gram amounts.
Edited to add: Or if I only get 25 grams of around 4 teas I wanted and end up splitting the rest of the $60 or so with other people, I’m totally fine with that.
When would you like to order by? probably pretty soon I’d imagine. I’m in, am just figuring out what I want at the moment.
Well, if you and I don’t want to spend too much, we’d have to wait for a couple more people. :D If you just want to make a list of what you might want, if you want 16,24, or 50grams regardless if anyone else wants it. It’s just a working list, nothing definite yet.
Here’s what I’ve come up with so far I"m just aiming to keep it under $50.00 including shipping. (I’m pretty ignorant when it comes to knowing shipping pricing and this is my first group buy.)
*Rose Royal- 25g
*Banana Chocolat-16g
*Ratatam- 16g
*Golden Honeydew-16g
*Peach Melba- 16g or 25g is fine depending on total
*Chocolat Strawberry Puer-25g
Neptune-25g
Would also be interested in splitting 50g of either
Ripe Mango Oolong
Melon Oolong
or Momo Oolong Supergrade
with someone.
Since you’re interested in many of the same teas I am, and you’re looking to keep it under $50 then this is entirely doable even if only you and I want to split an order. We can wait a couple more days to see if anyone else would like to join. Thanks :D
Sorry to send out bad news :( I wish I knew more about the situation, but that’s all the information I received. I’ll try to find out more details about it next time I go. ;_; can’t let them disappear without getting some of my favorites.
It looks like their France and Australia sites will ship internationally, but they make no mention of the estimated cost and they don’t carry my favorite Melon Oolong anyway…
There are also instructions on the Japanese site for using a forwarding service to have an order delivered internationally. It does look quite pricey though.
Huh, I looked at the France site last night, and they wouldn’t ship outside of Europe…
Australia would ship Int, but wouldn’t list pricing. They have to send you a special quote.
Japan used a dicey forwarding service and I personally wouldn’t trust it. I’d ask Yunomi if they’d carry Lupicia before using that…
It sounds like they’re closing the Australia and France stores anyway.
That’s an interesting idea about Yunomi, I guess we could ask Ian if that’s a possibility.
My best friend lives in San Jose and has confirmed with local Lupicia employees that the stores will be closing January 28th, and the website on February 28th.
I marched my nosy self back over to their SJ location (truthfully, I basically ran away without buying anything yesterday after hearing their news because ~anxiety~)…
So, they told me they’re closing all shops besides japan/Hawaii, and that the USA online store will close by the end of February 2019. I found out that the store only discovered the news about one month ago.
Hopefully that gives anyone some idea of a time frame for online ordering. The store definitely had lower stock and was sold out of quite a few teas (black soybean matcha, waaaah!!) but they assured me that the website has a larger selection.
I…totally spent too much money on too much tea today, like every new year. Took this as a sign that I should get the small clay teapot and a matcha cup I’ve eyeballed for the past few years in addition to nabbing some TKY and their 2019 year of the boar “Bouncing Boars”.
I hope me posting this has helped anyone out in this sad occasion.
Ah, sorry that gave you such anxiety… no fun. But thanks again for the initial info, otherwise it probably would have taken a while for us to figure it out.
If anyone else other than Lexie Aleah and I want to order, I will give it a couple more days to see if there is any other interest (but it will probably take a couple more days after that to finalize). I don’t want to wait too long for things to start selling out. A group order is a good way to try 16-25 grams of some teas before Lupicia is no longer… or to get some of your favorites without having to pay $60 to get to free shipping.
Cameron, I will admit I had the same exact idea about calling the Hawaii store… I’m not dealing with the loss well, heh.
@tea-sipper: Maybe if you put that Lupicia is going out of business more people will be attracted to the thread and willing to jump on the group buy… I’ve noticed from reading tea reviews that the majority still don’t know since Lupicia themselves are keeping the news under lock and key.
Thanks for the tip. Also, if you wanted to break your ‘No buy’ rule, I don’t think anyone would fault you with a website that is closing with teas that might be impossible to find later on. I understand you REALLY don’t want to buy any teas, but if you do break your own rule once in a while, I don’t think you will be judged for that. There isn’t any judgement either way from TEA PEOPLE… at least from me. You know what I’m saying?
I certainly broke my own rule over this. And I would have done it for ATR, too, if I’d known about them going out of business before they did.
You really don’t understand. My apartment is one room, I honestly cannot. There is no space in it for any more tea. It is breaking my heart, but I simply cannot. There is no place for me to put said tea at this point in time. I wish they were going out of business at any other point in time if they were going to go out of business, but they aren’t. I can’t exactly keep tea in the trunk of my car.
alright, I understand. I promise I won’t say anything about it again. Don’t worry, you’ll sip down some tea eventually, hopefully it just isn’t creating more stress for you.
I’d happily join in, if y’all don’t mind a Canadian participant.
It’s a huge hassle to order directly from here in Canada (need to request a special shipping quote; can’t go directly through their site) and I figure that even if I pay for the shipping from tea-sipper to my place it’ll still be cheaper than shipping directly from them…
Plus, opens up the possibility for me to get smaller sizes of some teas…
(But no worries if you’d rather not worry about international shipping; no hard feelings!)
Yeah, I haven’t done international shipping in ages, sorry Roswell. Maybe a few people in Canada could get a Canadian group order going?
Ros, I’ll PM you. I don’t mind adding whatever you want to my next order and then shipping it to you.
ETA: I think I did see Sil mention that she’s plotting an order too.
ETA again: Nevermind, I can’t PM you. You’re not following me. (sniff)
Roswell – I’m glad Sil or Cameron can help you out, I won’t feel nearly as bad about it. :D
I haven’t placed my order yet, but will be shortly (ie today). Check our usual FB group for the post if you want something in particular Roswell. I’m having it sent to my tea mule to cross the border with.
Thanks gang!! I sent you a message in the FB group with a list of what I’d like to grab :) I think that’s probably most convenient for everyone since I have a tea from 52Teas w. Sil anyway that’ll need to get send over at some point in the future anyway & it’s always easier to go through Canada Post from within Canada whenever possible.
