British branded teas reformulated for "the American pallet"?
I’ve read several comments that British companies that sell their tea in the US reformulate their tea for the American market with lesser quality tea. Can anyone confirm this?
What brands?
I know Twinings has a UK English breakfast and a US/Canada English breakfast. I’m not sure about the difference in flavour, but I know they are different formulas.
If I am guessing right they may be reformulated not to use lower quality teas but to be drank without milk. I think a lot more of American tea drinkers forego the addition of milk to their tea, I know I do.
It’s interesting but I still can’t confirm that British tea makers have actually changed their formulas for the U.S. market. But I have found that Yorkshire tea makes a 100 tea bag pack for the U.S. market that uses considerably less tea per tea bag. Their standard tea bag uses 3 grams, their “one cup” bags are 2.5 grams. The 100 bag pack uses 2.1 grams. I discerned this by comparing package sizes. I have not bothered to do this with other makers but tea bag weight would make a big difference in taste!
It’s funny though. As I read the reviews on different teas I found quite a few people who were upset that PG Tips sold “only orange pekoe”in the US. And a few folk who expected their tea to taste of oranges!
Do British companies make different tea blends for the U.S. market? I don’t know but we might deserve it!
About the question, I have no idea. I hate to be trivial but it seems worth pointing out that it’s “palate,” sense of taste versus that version of wood platform used for shipping bulk goods. Palette refers instead to a range of colors, or to a set of paints. I’m not one of those kinds of people, to go around correcting spelling or language use, but I do try to be helpful if I can.
Related to the question it’s better to get off tea-bag tea and commercial loose versions like Twinings anyway.
Yeah, I know all of the forms of palette and there /their/ they’re etc., but sometimes I can’t be bothered to edit silly mistakes! And nope…loose tea vs tea bag is not the discussion. Thank you for contributing!
I think someone should get their hands on a couple brands and their US and UK versions and do as taste test! And then report back. :)
