Tea for Anxiety

Dr Jim mentioned chamomile, which isn’t a true tea but is said to be calming. To that I would add lavender. I don’t notice the effects that much myself but I have a friend who swears by lavender for anxiety (though she’s talking about the smell rather than in tea — still, you might try a blend with lavender in it and see what that does).

I have anxiety as well. I mostly don’t notice it because I’m too busy to notice ;-) (which is probably why I have it in the first place) but sometimes I notice the effects, like not sleeping well. I’ve tried to cut out caffeine after around noon (but sometimes it stretches to 2).

For me, it’s less about which tea is involved and more about the heat. Hot beverages causes me to sip slowly, and this is what reduces the anxiety for me. It’s a sort of meditative, breath-centered activity to sit with a hot cup and sip though usually I’m doing something else as well (reading, watching television, working) that takes my mind off what the sipping is doing for me. I find that if I’m looking for something to reduce anxiety and it seems not to be working, I get anxious about that. So I try not to go into these things with any set expectations.

I actually began a matcha company because I struggled with both OCD and anxiety, and matcha was the one beverage that helped calm me down and pick me up at the same time. Now, with that said, everyone IS different, so I can’t say if it’ll help you how it helped me. But to me, it was life-changing. Starting next week we’ll be carrying a lavender matcha, which to me feels extra calming.

For tea to help, I believe you’ve to ENJOY tea. You can’t just simply rely on science. How can tea, or any other beverage, in the world help you relax, if you dislike it?

It doesn’t mean you’ve to give up on tea. Explore, try different teas, until you find one you like. Then check again whether it relaxes you or not. Those who enjoy tea, enjoy the benefits!
