For those of you who are not familiar with this tea, it is a blend of green tea (usually a low grade bancha, in our case a mid-grade summer sencha) and toasted rice. “Genmai” itself means brown rice, or unpolished rice, but these days, polished rice is cheaper than unpolished rice due to economies of scale, so the toasted rice is made from polished rice (the kind you might eat at a Japanese restaurant).

There are some horrible, false origin stories on the internet. The origin of genmaicha has nothing to do with samurai if you’ve seen that one. Instead, it originated around the turn of the 20th century from a folk custom of toasting a New Year’s rice cake called kagami mochi and blending it with tea that had gone stale (this was before modern packaging and storage if you remember). Enterprising tea merchants turned this custom into what we now know as genmaicha.

ABOUT YUNOMI
Yunomi is a Japanese brand on a mission: Bridge the borders separating Japanese producers and consumers around the world.

We make it easy to cross cultural, linguistic, and logistic oceans—particularly the oceans of complexity surrounding the international shipment of food. We believe in Commerce as Communication, and seek to create lasting relationships between producers and consumers—more than “farm to table”, we promote “people to people”. Yunomi allows consumers to not only find top quality products, but also learn about the people who work passionately to create the best. And we reverse the flow of information as well, translating feedback from consumers global into Japanese so the farmers and producers in Japan can also learn more about their fans!
