What Tea Is Suitable for Fall?
Iced black tea is my first choice in summer, but I don’t know what tea to drink when fall comes. What tea do you drink in fall, my friends?
I like spicy teas for fall—masala chai, orange-flavored black tea with cloves and cinnamon (I believe Stash and Harney & Sons have teas like this). Other than that, most of my teas I do drink year round, oolongs, blacks, and greens are for all seasons in my opinion.
In Autumn the weather turns drier, and so people often feel thirsty and dehydrated. In this climate, Oolong and White teas are recommended. Oolong, falling between black and green teas, is neither “cold” tasting like green teas, nor too warming like black teas, and so is perfect for the milder temperatures of Autumn. Oolong helps sooth and moisten your throat and skin, and is also thought to be good for your lungs, again helping you in cooler, drier weather.
But you can drink any tea when you need it!
I would probably say any tea that falls in the “warming family”—so oolong, puer (shu/black over sheng/green), and black tea. When a cold befalls you, a white tea works in a pinch to help defend against inflammation pertaining to the lungs (per Eastern medicine). I usually use Silver Needle since it’s made entirely of tea buds and the nutritive content will be higher. More “aged” white teas are more suitable for this purpose because it is believed that they work more effectively the older they get. In terms of taste, usually newer white teas are sweeter. Can’t say I don’t drink all teas, warming and cooling, all year long though. I crave them in cycles. Generally, I begin my day with a cooling, and end with a warming.
I will choose oolong and black tea for fall. Green tea and white tea will be nice for summer I think.
Any tea! But I do drink more spring harvest in summer-winter, then winter harvest until summer :)
I agree with others who’ve said that any tea is good for fall! Nothing like a hot mug of tea on a crisp fall day. But I especially love spicy tea (like a masala chai), apple or pumpkin flavored tea (Market Spice’s Caramel Apple Black is an all-time favorite), and a good roasted oolong.
