pu'er order from white2tea

I’ve decided to try a few different pu’ers, since I want to learn more about them. I haven’t tried a sheng pu’er yet. So, keeping in mind that I wanted to experiment, I decided to order some samples from White 2 Tea. (I’d go with their sample kits but it was more than I want to spend at the moment.)

Shou/Ripe: 2015 Brown Sugar, 2016 Brown Sugar, 2015 Red Shroom, 2006 Little Gold Melon Shu

Sheng/Raw: 2016 Daily Drinker, 2015 Smooch, 2015 Milk Cream & Alcohol, 2015 Little Walk

What do you think I should try first? I tried to go for ones that sounded nice and might make good comparisons (although I was aiming more for ones that sounded nice). Any comments or advice on other pu’er teas to try or compare?

The basics set is really good and it comes with free shipping, so its cheaper than it looks!

Ive heard little walk is really good.

They are running a free shipping promotion this weekend, so there is no need to order a sample set in order to get free shipping.

I personally tried these from your list: 2016 Daily Drinker, 2015 Smooch, 2015 Little Walk. All of them are good teas.

If you have resources though, for raw puerh try Pin and If you are reading this… from 2015

If you can stomach spending a few extra dollars, I’d recommend a sample of one of their mid-range sheng puerhs. They’re very good for the price. Think Teadontlie, Pound Cake, Head (though this one is pretty bitter atm), 2015 Pin, or 2015 If You’re Reading This It’s 2 Late (My personal favorite in this range).

I personally found Daily Drinker a bit boring, though I haven’t tried it since shortly after it was released, so it may have improved. Smooch, M,C &A, and Little Walk are all winners in my opinion though. It’s honestly hard to go wrong with W2T in my experience.

I think what W2T does especially well is mid to high tier sheng…can’t speak to ripe, I don’t have it often enough. So I agree with others to def try a sample of If You’re Reading this… it’s $7.50. I also think Bosch is amazing enough to be worth getting but only if it doesn’t break the bank. 2009 Yiwu is also quite interesting, it’s $7.50.

Enjoy !

Ooh, totally forgot to mention th 09 Yiwu above. That one is awesome.

Into the Mystic. Everyone should at least try that one. Thick and viscous.

Matu said

I just tried that one for the first time last night, mrmopar. I will have to try it again, because I wasn’t exactly wowed by the thickness or the flavor. It was good, but based on the one session I’ve done with it thus far, it doesn’t punch as high as its price point.

It needed some to to wake up a bit. I actually got mine as soon as it came out and sat on it a while. Did you you brew heavy? I normally do 10 grams and about 150ml gong fu.

Matu said

Mine was part of a Black Friday order I believe (maybe earlier) so I’ve had it a good while. I did about the same ratio as you – 6.7g in 100mL.

mrmopar said

Weird. I thought mine was decent. It has been a while so I may need a revisit.

Matu said

Definitely was decent – good, even. Just not really great as I would hope for from a w2t cake at that price. I definitely owe it a revisit as well – could’ve just been an off-day for me, who knows.

I have em all the time. I have to think to put stuff together sometimes. New work schedule is kickin my butt lately.

As for the sheng, Milk Cream and Alcohol has gotten pretty universally good reviews. That was my one of my first full cakes of sheng and I think it introduced me well for the price. I have heard similar for little walk but haven’t personally tried that tea. I would stay away from the smooch at least at first. It’s a really solid tea, actually my favorite off your list by quite a bit, but it can be pretty harsh for a beginner. I would highly recommend it, especially for the convenient size of the ball if you’re on a tight budget, just don’t drink it first until you’ve gotten an idea of sheng flavor profiles first with the others.
I’m not as familiar with those shous, only owning a few little gold melons. I like those quite a bit, although I would recommend letting them air out at least 2-3 weeks first. I don’t remember quite what it was as I don’t think it’s got too much fermentation to it or anything, but they got much better for me after some airing out.

Has anyone tried Repave? I might grab a cake since it’s well reviewed but I’m not too familiar with aged sheng.

That one seems to be an oddly polarizing tea. Some people love it, some can’t stand it. Personally, I couldn’t get past some weird note I was getting in it. I definitely think it’s at least worth a sample. And if you do buy a whole cake and dislike it, there are enough fans of it that you could probably offload it without much trouble.

Thank you all for your suggestions and advice! I’ve added some more teas to my list to try. c: I can’t wait for my first bunch to arrive! I’ll let you all know what I think of them.

Matu said

We better see those reviews! ;) Only kidding – but definitely looking forward to seeing what you think of em!

Episkey said

I actually haven’t written any reviews yet… :/ I still feel like a tea novice so I’ve been wary of trying to describe the teas I’ve tried in any great detail.

Ken said

These are tasting notes as much as reviews, and it allows you to enter multiple notes, so you can compare your tastings of the same teas, over time and how you evolve.

My opinions of Tie guan yin have evolved significantly over the last few months for example.

mrmopar said

Let us know for sure how they hit you. We all have stood where you are so don’t be afraid to write your findings.

Matu said

Yea – I write tasting notes more for myself than anything else. If other people wanna read them, that’s all good, but the main reason I write them is to keep track of what I’m drinking and my thoughts.

Don’t worry about being “wrong” or anything in your notes. Everybody tastes and experiences teas differently. It’s fun to see what other people think of a tea and compare what you got from it.

Thank you c: I’ll do my best!

Is W2T primarily known for their sheng?
Are any of their shou recommended or are other suppliers a better choice? Menghai, CL, YS, WP, EOT, TU, Teavivre, Bana, Tribute, etc.?
What’s the status of Mandala?
Thanks!

I wan’t impressed with the W2T ripes I’ve tried, but I know a lot of people like the Old Reliable. It may just be personal preference, but I really like YS’s ripes.

looseTman said

With which YS shou were you most impressed?

Ken said

Year of the horse and green miracle for me.

But the only White2tea teas I have are the basic 1 and basic 2 set.

My favorite is the 2013 Hui Run. I also like the 2011 Dragon of Jingmai and 2012 Lao Cha Tuo brick. I’ve yet to try the Green Miracle but hear it’s really good. For other brands on YS I like the 2011 Nan Jian ripe mushroom

We’ve enjoyed 1 2013 Hui Run cake, 1 Nan Jian ripe cake, 500g of W2T LaoChaTuo, that we really enjoyed, & 1 other laochatuo. Haven’t tired this the Dragon of Jingmai or the NJ ripe mushroom. The NJ raw mushroom was good. So far, our fav has been https://steepster.com/teas/menghai-tea-factory-berylleb-on-ebay/35545-2011-menghai-dayi-100-year-tribute-cake.

I just went down the same path you are with my first order of shengs from W2T last month. Loved the Daily Drinker, Little Walk, and Milk, Cream, & Alcohol. I did not care for the Smooch at all. I also enjoyed Fade which I’m surprised no one mentioned. (or maybe I just missed it.) I am still working through the basics set and am enjoying the 2014 huangpian the best out of all 4 cakes.
