Grams per 100ml, what do you do?
my personal rule is 4g per 100ml(ball rolled oolong as example), different teas can change that or sometimes i just want a little more concentrated brew. There are so many variations so just as general discussion i want to hear what your guidelines are and why?
raw puerh i go 6-7 g per 100 mL.
ripe puerh i got 7-8 g per 100 mL.
depends on the tea too.
I go 5g for most everything except rolled green oolong, which I go with 4g. :-)
It varies, so I’ll give two examples of some teas I’ve been drinking regularly lately. I’m primarily a puer drinker, and pretty much always start with flash steeps:
2016 Kunlu Bitter Wild Sheng – 6g. This tea is super strong, and if I brew with too much, the sweet aftertaste starts to taste artificial. 7g is good, but makes it hard to finish a session in one go.
1992 Meishuzi Sheng – 12g. This tea really benefits from being pushed, leading to a strong aftertaste. Also, due to the heavy compression, in early steeps the tea may barley open. I’ll generally steep this for two days, and get a bonus thermos steep.
Which is to say, I like to push teas, but some teas are already strong enough, and others don’t really benefit from being pushed.
In general
~ 1g / 25ml for most non-puerh
~ 1g / 15ml for puerh
I can’t remember why or how those figures became my baseline, but they are? Adjust as needed by tea, by session, by weather, etc :)
