Duplicate teas in the database
Maybe this has been addressed before but I didn’t find anything by using the search bar.
I was searching for the tea I’m drinking right now to put down some tasting notes and I found that the same tea is listed three different times!

This drives me insane. Is there any way to report or fix things like this in a way that migrates all the reviews and cupboard-ings?
I report them all to Jason. I don’t really get answers anymore, although I think the last time I sent in a bunch I got a response from another moderator using the account?
When I used to do it a lot more (I’ve gotten behind on my database-crawling), I post the “original” and then all the duplicates I found; they then get merged under said “original” banner.
Another thing I’ve noticed people doing is self-moderating; they edit the names of any duplicates (usually the least-popular copy of a tea, or any under variations of the company name/outside the ‘main’ company tag), and add “Duplicate” to the name, usually in brackets to make it stand out.
I’d make sure to report them too as well, if you choose to do that.
I see them all the time too. I never want to flood Jason with them though. I think other things are probably a priority with Steepster. Are there any other Steepsterers who have the power to remove doubles?
Sometimes duplicates are created because the person does a search for the tea in question and although it is there it is not returned by a search. The person then creates a duplicate not knowing the original was there in the first place. Sometimes to find a tea by a search your wording has to be quite precise. I think this leads to many duplicates. Also, a legitimate reason to create a duplicate for say a puerh tea is to spotlight the source of the tea. A tea obtained from EBay may be the same tea obtained from Yunnan Sourcing but there will be differences. Sometimes people want to spotlight the differences in potential storage.
Yeah, I’ve almost created a new entry for a tea a couple times now since the search is finnicky—and I’ve only been here a couple weeks! Maybe it’s just me, but I’d rather have one page for the tea and people can specify source in their notes.
A web site that does this really well is tobaccocellar.com. Obviously the goal of that site is different, it’s not a place to review or explore tobacco, it’s just a place to catalog your own collection. But if you dig around a bit it’s beautifully done. You attach all kinds of notes about storage conditions, date purchased, source purchased, etc. Point is, you search the manufacturer and the name of the individual product, then specify further in your personal cellar without creating new entries.
To the original poster: The three teas you listed are from three different tea companies so even though they’re the same ‘tea’ – they’re different because of the different tea company.
Well, sigh. I created a new tea yesterday because I couldn’t find it in the database by searching, and today I discovered a made a duplicate.
I find that when there are already duplicates of a tea in the database I look to see under which one more people have posted reviews and I use that one.
I can’t remember the best place to post this, so I’m adding it here. I found some duplicate entries for Stash’s English Breakfast. Two of them have many reviews/ratings so I’m hesitant to label one or the other as [duplicate]. I’m guessing they’ll have to merged, if someone knows how to do that (can’t remember that either).

I think you got it right by posting it in the Cleanup Thread here: https://steepster.com/discuss/41745-a-steepster-cleanup-initiative?page=4
Unfortunately, because each of them has reviews on them, we’re still waiting for the admins to give moderators the ability to move reviews between teas (I explain how this works https://steepster.com/discuss/41745-a-steepster-cleanup-initiative?page=4 here as well, but have yet to have any of our new admins respond to me).
I didn’t even remember I already posted this, thank you! I had some of this tea today and noticed the different entries. I’ll try to remember the clean up thread next time. Thanks also for explaining the process!
I’m hoping by bringing it up again it’ll draw some attention from the admins so we can do something about it. It looks like the current mods are just lacking a permission or two.
