Tea & films: What are you watching?
We need a tea & film thread.
I have just been on a really big asian cinema splurge. Absolutely loving the stuff coming out of korea in the last 10 years. Anyone who is a fan of good kung fu or gangster movies really needs to check some out
A bittersweet life
Mr nobody (or is it the man from nowhere? i cant remember)
No tears for the dead
a dirty carnival
sympathy for mr vengeance
sympathy for lady vengeance
The raid 2
monster boy
Yakuza apocalypse
I cant believe I have never watched Kurosawa either. Really very good. ‘Seven samurai’ and ‘Ran’ were both brilliant. Totally different from the more hardcore violence of the modern movies. I do like this gritty 18-cert adult nature of the korean & japanese offerings vs the big budget teen movies hollywood are knocking out. what the hell did they do to aliens.. fail
also ones I have watched that I enjoyed:
red cliff
admiral
crouching tiger hidden dragon (new one)
rurouni kenshin movies
rough cut
shadowless sword
the restless
ip man
Any film chat welcome, documentaries, anything!
You might like “Departures” directed by Yojiro Takita. It’s a very sweet movie, and Roger Ebert included it among his “Great Movies” list.
ok, more kurosawa, kagemusha. Another brilliant film. Hes well good!
and my little princess, also enjoying :)
Stephen Chow movies. Notably Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle. Action, Comedy, with Kung Fu mixed in.
As for the more sensitive, Kondowa Aisaika (今度は愛妻家). My wife was bawling at the end of this movie and I have to admit, I did shed some tears. I don’t know if you can find a copy of this movie with subtitles. Memories of Tomorrow (明日の記憶). About a man battling Alzheimer’s. Ken Watanabe plays the main character.
Chiba Shinichi (Sonny Chiba)
The Yagyuu Conspiracy. I liked the TV series more than the movie. A Chiba Shinichi TV/Movie.
Shadow Warriors. TV series about the ninja Hattori Hanzo. Chiba Shinichi and Sanada Hiroyuki.
Regarding the Japanese trendy dramas of the 1990s, I’ve seen most of them including my favorite, Tokyo Love Story.
Then you ave seen most of the Hayao Miyazaki Anime movies? All of them are pretty good.
Have you seen Akira? That movie was on the cutting edge of Anime when in came out. There are also several films of Ghost in the Shell which are pretty good.
Kind of off topic, what cameras do you use to shoot with?
BTW George Lucas was a fan of the Kurosawa films and he tried to cast Toshiro Mifune for the part of Obi Won Kenobi, but Mifune turned him down because George Lucas was almost an unkown director at that time.
ive watched anime since akira came out, I was 8 at the time. Ive liked oolong (not the good stuff!, that was the last 5 years) since then. So yeah, GITS is one of my favourites. The kid with the super famicom with japanese language games
I shoot with a canon 650d & 100mm non IS macro, I like chasing insects & abstract nature shots. I want an mpe-65 but I know its another level of hard
I’ve never been to Japan either. I should come
For the past 2 weeks I’ve been binge watching The Office while having tea time.
I’m at the end of Season 5. I’ve never laughed so hard at TV show in my life.
I just love Asian films! My absolute fav is House of Flying Daggers. I have had to stop the movie at certain points just to admire the beautiful scenes. Amazing fight scenes too.
Empresses of the Palace on Netflix has some beautiful filming too.
There’s a few more I know aren’t listed here but can’t remember them.
13 assassins is great if you havent, also there is another newer one which im trying to remember the name which is good wuxia. Also CTHD2
Flying Daggers was indeed beautifully filmed; Hero is another movie with good cinematography.
http://www.imdb.com/list/ls059108722/ wuxia
http://www.imdb.com/list/ls050746928/ action
all have great films on there
Hmmm. If you enjoy Kurosawa, I’d recommend ‘Rashomon’ and ’Dodes’ka-den.’
The latter was Kurosawa’s first color movie.
This isnt the ‘tea and kung-fu movies: what you watching’ thread.
Any reviews or chat welcome
Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon.
Quite possibly the best movie for tea-drinking I’ve ever seen, I always feel so calm watching it!
