Worst tea you ever had?
One that immediately comes to mind is Cocomint Cream from DavidsTea made me feel nauseated, and the texture was oily. Another is a Yunnan Sourcing shou blended with an herb called Jiaogulan. Weird, weird taste.
Oh noooooooo I remember that one. I tried it in store and after one sip I was like I…regret thi s
It’s a toss up between a Liubao I got from Chawangshop that tasted like dirt, and a Lapsang Souchong (can’t remember where it came from) that tasted like campfire and ashes.
Yea, they dry the Lapsang Souchong over pine wood, which is actually toxic. It’s a traditional method that no one really practice anymore.
A typical Lapsang Souchong today would have profiles like mi xiang (honey), guiyuan xiang (logan), etc. It took me a while to find the song yan xiang (pine smoked) type in China as it’s not as popular among the locals.
I still find the pine smoked Souchong in China to be much more palatable than the ones they export to the States. Somehow most of the Souchong I’ve had in the States just taste like…. burnt rubber tire.
Burnt rubber tire is also a good way to describe that Lapsang. I just found the package, it is Oliver Pluff & Co. Just threw it out. What horrible stuff!
is the good stuff a lot better? I’m guessing I maybe only had cheaper quality.
I dont tend to go for smokey teas any more but am still interested how it tastes
I don’t know; I tried one other Lapsang from a more reputable vendor (Joseph Wesley, who has wonderful teas) and I still didn’t like it. I think smokey teas are just not my thing.
I have found that the one type of tea I add milk too is a too smoky Lapsang Souchong. Improves them a lot.
I heard that better quality isn’t as smoky so tried a Zen tea Lapsang Souchong After a terrible experience with Enjoying tea) and it wasn’t bad. Of course I really like smokey teas.
Good God, that sounds terrifying! Now I know never to try it. Those smoky teas can be so intense.
The ones I’ve tried taste like a shot of liquid smoke. I’ve used them up by adding them to bbq sauce or tea eggs
Teavivre’s Lapsang is good. The base tea underneath is sweet. Goes really well with some nice, meaty pizza.
Russian Caravan is a milder smokey tea. Perhaps try that out! I’m not a massive fan of Lapsang Souchong on it’s own, it can be so strong it’s like being choked. Russian Caravan is much milder though. Check out my review :) http://www.tastethetea.co.uk/2016/02/07/russian-caravan/
Russian Caravan is a really nice one. Sometimes I’ve noticed a slight piney aroma/taste with it, have you? As if one had just walked out of a Russian forest barbecue :)
ohh then theres the DT stuff i bought when i had no clue what i liked. not a fan of the citron oolong or the coffee puerh, glitter gold, alpine punch… red velvet cakes ok i guess. some of their dessert/herbals i like iced in summer tho.
Oh god. I got that coffee puerh when I was first getting myself off coffee and into tea and eugh. It’s so gross.
I can make and stomach a latte to at least drink most of the mistake teas and samples I’ve had but… This one I just couldn’t do it.
My first sheng was a brick from YunnanSourcing. It tasted like gritty leather. I couldnt finish my session with it after 3 steeps.
There is also the donald trump tea someone reviewed here. I gave it a 1 without even trying it, thats how bad it is :D
Funny, doesn’t seem to be in the database anymore, must have been removed as spam. I would have liked to look up the reviews even if I don’t see myself buying a tea named after any political candidate.
Doesn’t look so bad if you like hibiscus fruit blends. The one reviewer who actually drank it seemed to like it. Giving it a 1 because you don’t like Donald trump is not an honest review. Drinking it and giving it a 1 may be an honest review. I’m curious where they actually sold this tea. It was probably created for one of his casino brands at some point. I doubt Donald Trump actually had anything to do with it. He was fond of putting his name on things.
Thats true. It was posted directly after the other bad review was and it was meant as a joke. I cant stand the man, sorry. I’ll remove it if you think its not in good taste.
Green Lime. By island rose. I took one sip. Thought ok… I’ll give it another go. Two… three…. Dump… so gross..
Don’t want to bring life to this thread again, but I had to reread it and I received another ab workout: http://steepster.com/discuss/11099-tea-comedy-i-have-to-share
Mine so far has been a black tea with blueberry. I think it was synthetic blueberry flavouring. Yuck!
I can’t believe no one has mentioned the Teavana tomato tea. I thought I was being punked when they gave me that in the store.
I would have to say my worst in memory (I may not remember some really awful stuff from my past) was Tiger Eye from Adagio.
I tied different temperatures and steep times. I tried with and without cream and sweetener. In all cases all I got was bitter and burnt flavors. I used up half of the sampler pack I had received trying to make it drinkable and then just gave up and threw the rest away.
I had really wanted to like it so badly.
Supposedly it has rich notes of chocolate and caramel.
Reviews called it rich, creamy, sweet, decadent, etc.
It was more like unsweetened cocoa powder (without the wonderful aroma of a good cocoa powder) and over cooked, utterly burnt caramel with none of its sweetness.
While I normally don’t like cream or sugar in my teas, I thought I would try it just to see if it would approve things. It didn’t. :)
