Got mine today too!

I only have a few days before going out of town for Thanksgiving, so I’m going to stat drinking with the top of the list and save my notes for whenever everyone decides to drink and compare them :)

I got mine today and had a ball sorting through it and adding it to my inventory. Tomorrow I’ll start drinking!

Thanks for putting it together LP: it looks wonderful.

I’m drinking the 1986 Tung Ting (first on the list) and it is amazing. I have this awful feeling that discovering aged oolong may make a bigger dent in my bank balance than my discovery of puerh.

How would you describe the flavor profile?

tperez said

Agreed it’s really good! That one has me thinking “now is a dollar a gram (the sample size) really THAT bad for a special occasion tea?”

Being a bargain hunter that’s something I thought I’d never say. Thankfully I’m broke haha

I haven’t started on mine yet but I know this sample comes from Tea Trekker and they sell good stuff. I have bought from them before.

Just keep an eye out. I’m January I’ll list what I enjoyed enough to stock up on. I have a few hundred dollars set aside to do so and would be willing to allow a few to join in. It would be cheaper, but I am not doing so with intentions of others supporting the purchases; each buy will be driven by my personal ranking.
This is an interesting sampler as it provides teas that I bought the remaining stock of (sorry) , some to compare storage , and other different joys such as a fourty year old oolong. All together there are those who will discover something new they like or dislike. The other group is the hunters of good aged oolong who didn’t want to drop $25 on just one tea to see if it’s okay. I’m excited :)
All I have tried is the YS dhp because I bought a lot of it.

I’m most curious about the ginseng , beauty, DanCong, and the 4 year… and to think those are not even a third of everything
I just wrote a lot… Woops

I’ll need to write up a full review, but for me the main flavors were a nutty, toasty flavor with a bit of raisin. The aroma was really great, but the most amazing part was the finish. I had to try this today, so I had a single steep then drove to a meeting. 30 minutes after my single cup, I could still taste the tea.

I love that aged oolong huigan. It lasts forever! I had one session with an early 90’s dong ding, and the sweet berry/raisin aftertaste lasted for hours. I hope some of these in the buy achieve that same effect.

Trying the 1980 Alishan. It is good. Needs long steep times since the leaves are very compacted.

Ok, I tried the 1986 Tung Ting. That is one roasty tea. It was certainly an experience in a cup but it was too roasty for my tastes. I won’t be picking any up. I hope they are not all so roasty.

I just created a spreadsheet for these so I can keep track and take notes. I saw the 2008 bitter gourd tgy from Chawangshop, and it made me wonder if it’s the same 2008 roasted tgy in bitter melon from What-Cha. Does anyone know?

Yunnan Sourcing also has one I believe

The YS is from 2015, so it’s not aged. I have been thinking about getting it though, to compare it to the 2008.

I got a bitter melon from Royal Tea Bay. Dragon Tea House has one too. Both are aged. I opted for those over What cha because it was much cheaper.

The bittermelon TGY from Yunnan Sourcing is good.

Not many of these seem to be listed here, would you guys all be up for creating a page for each and writing some tasting notes? I’ll start a new one for an unlisted tea later today!

Drank the 1996 Fujian Se Zhong today. This was an interesting tea that I really didn’t pin down. The best description of the notes that I can come up with is whiskey but of course without the punch. Has anyone else drank this, what did you think?

Rasseru said

Yeah I kinda get that. Also wet storage
