Dirt in my green tea

I can’t find a previous thread on this. I just brewed a pot of green tea I got pretty cheap in a Vietnamese grocery store and noticed that the leaves were very dirty when I dumped them out. I’m not sure what it was. They were small black particles very charcoal-like. Needless to say I did not drink it. Has this ever happened to you?

Hasn’t happened to me, but surely something is wrong with that tea.

This is likely char from wok or roasting, burnt edges on the leaves. Is there a smoky odor? This can settle and integrate into the tea.

Oh, that makes sense! Thank you! It did have a smokey flavor and the leaves were balled into pearls. The ash was probably trapped in the leaves as they were rolled.
