Official Oolong thread!
New thread…Because I need to profess my love for oolong!!
I love the puerh thread so much and find it so informative that I thought it might be nice to start a discussion about oolong as well.
Post here your new oo-love affairs or your existing oo-long time friendships :-)
I’ll start with the new oolong players, Taiwan Sourcing.
Drank their Bronze Tie Guan Yin. I was impressed. Pretty dark roast, but surprisingly not overwhelming with “roastiness”, no burnt taste. The first note I got was cannabis… How do I know what cannabis tastes like? Well…i’ll leave that to your imagination ;-)
Eucalyptus follows….A fresh mouthfeel. Dried fruit sweetness as well. A beautiful tea.
I must say I’m very impressed with the quality I have found in Taiwan Sourcing products so far. With Scott Wilson behind it, why am I not surprised?
Good luck to them!
I’ve seen this new company, and if it’s Yunnan counterpart it should be amazing!
Thank you mrmo!! I’m glad you approve :-)
@haveteawilltravel, yes, you can order with trust!
I have done two sessions with the Bronze TGY. Loved it! Very strong cannabis note but this wasn’t as heavy as I expected by looking at the leaves. It looks quite darkly roasted, but it tastes very moderately roasty.
Plus 1 on the Scott shout out. I love this new venture – and also @TheTeaFairy – I’m so glad you started this thread. The oolongs don’t get enough love. I will be back to discuss the 2015 Lishan as well.
Yesterday I had the Li Shan Early Spring High Mountain Jade Oolong Tea from Taiwain Sourcing. It is absolutely lovely. Very floral and green with a bit of buttery background. It was quite sweet.
I enjoyed a long session on my tea porch during a rainy afternoon and it was a perfect blend of beautiful tea and beautiful atmosphere. It was the inaugural session for my new (gorgeous) tea table as well. I’m glad I picked such a pretty tea for it.
So far I am really impressed with the quality of the TS offerings.

Brilliant idea! Thank you for starting this thread. Might have to do one for other teas as well. :D
Love this! I just started to really appreciate oolongs a few months ago. It’s amazing the depth it has. I prefer to stay on the greener side of oolongs but love to try the black oolongs.
I think it’s that creamyish flavor that I love most. so yum.
i’m so happy for you, getting into oolong is so exciting! Be patient with the darker ones, they do require more pratice but they can be so rewarding!!
Today was a Goi Fei oolong from taiwan. I enjoyed its smoky tones, but it did not stand up well against multiple steepings (got 6 good ones). The leaves were a little rough for wear. I still did appreciate a nice rolled roast though :)

What a great idea TeaFairy! We really needed this thread! :)
Today I’m having fresh sheng tasting planned, but I may be able to sneak in an oolong somewhere along the way. ;)
I love oolong! Da Hong Pao is my favorite. The last tea I reviewed was a Ruan Zhi oolong from Thailand (in a blog post, not here, sorry, I’ll work on that), and before that two similar dark roasted versions, likely Jin Xuan. The most interesting oolong I tried recently was a Rou Gui; amazing flavors and finish / aftertaste. My other favorite from the last half a year was a dark oolong from Hatvalla, from Vietnam. Come to think of it that should be listed here because What-Cha now carries those (Red Buffalo oolong, to give it a name).
Very interesting, thanks for posting this…I havent had the pleasure of ever trying vietnam oolong, sounds great!
I love, love rock oolong, DHP is certainly one of my favorite oolong ever!
It’s way too general but oolongs from Vietnam and Thailand aren’t different enough from those from Taiwan to be missing much by not trying them. Of course then someone makes a really nice and unique one and that’s not really true anymore. They drink more green tea in Vietnam, much more, and do interesting things with herbs blended with tea. I’ve had two very nice black teas from Vietnam, and two similar to loose pu’er, so I guess the diversity is there.
I enjoy the less oxidized oolongs especially baozhong.
My latest purchases are from shanshuiteas.com. Brian Wright consistantly has the best Taiwan oolongs.
this is another great tea company

they are a Quebecois company with an online presence as well it has tea shops in Quebec
Hehe, i’m so hapoy to hear this… I am Quebecoise and I lived in Montreal for many years!! I’ve had the pleasure of having tea at CS and have met François the owner, a gear guy! Love, love their teas!
Has anyone heard of eco-cha? They ran a survey and you get a killer coupon. I ended up buying some oolong to try out. I don’t know anything about them or their quality, so I’ll learn once my package arrives. They looked pretty fairly priced mostly.
Oh my, you did good, eco-cha is awesome! Did you buy their Dong Ding Jin Xuan?
So good!!
They were sold out of a lot of stuff, so I bought their high mountain something. I actually can’t remember, I did a late night buy xD I’m pretty excited, for it seems like high quality taiwanese oolong :)
Eco-Cha has some of my favorite Oolong! I honestly have not found a better Dong Ding yet.
