This is a very interesting post. I never assumed a 30 second wash would rid you of eighty percent of the caffeine. I had kind of assumed perhaps 30% per wash and that you needed a longer time than 30 seconds.

As to the theory that white tea has just as much caffeine as black tea I wonder how many white teas he tested. Some whites have less caffeine. One of the least liked merchants on this website, Teavana, tests all their teas for caffeine content. Most of their white and green teas are very low in caffeine, I think under 15mg. That is one thing I like about Teavana, I can accurately know the caffeine level of a tea.

He also said that teas heavy in buds will have more caffeine, this I already knew. He also showed that the leaf stalks have less caffeine by a fair margin than the leaves. This I already knew. Hojicha is made from leaf stalks and stems and the roasted. The roasting process lowers the caffeine content even more I am told. This is why I bought two different Hojichas recently, one from Japan, Tablinshop on EBay, and one fro Shi Zen Tea in Pennsylvania.

I think in the end some green teas are lower in caffeine than other teas, you just have to know which ones. Its too bad thee is no home test for caffeine content.

However, in the end I think I still have to go by my gastroenterologist and drink more green tea. The next time I go in to see him I will have to ask him about this study.

But when Teavana tests, is that the teas that have very little tea in them or the straight teas? Because I think that any tea that is mostly fruit bits is going to be much lower in caffeine than pretty much any straight tea. :)

Ive done a lot of research and posted here. Not sure if there’s an easy way to look up my posts.

I suffer from Afib and SVT so I need to be careful with caffeine intake.

Basically there’s a few rules of thumb. temperature, time, resteeping, and kind of tea.

Aged teas and roasting will bring down caffeine count. Hotter water temp and longer steep times will bring it up.

Oolong is one of the better teas for caffeine diet because typically they are 2 or 3 leaf to bud ratio, bigger leaves, and you can resteep for days. And a roasted TGY or Dong Ding will even be better.

A Dragonwell or all bud Yunnan black you probably want to avoid.

It would be great if each manufacturer provided specific caffeine count because there are huge swings in same types of tea. Amount of sun, use of fertilizer, when the tea was picked, kind of dna of the tea tree, etc. But this is expensive process, so don’t hold your breath. Great tip about Teavanna though. It’s always nice to have a point of reference.

I drink a variety of teas, mostly Oolong but occasionally cheat with a Sheng or Shou puer. For the most part I assume that for every gram of tea, I average I’m consuming 20-25 units of caffeine once I’m done with all my steeps (this is based on extensive research, averaging actual caffeine counts of a variety of teas). Most doctors recommend no more than 200 per day, I try to stay around 100. So that basically equates to 4-5 grams of tea per day.

While the myth of 80% of the caffeine goes away with a 30 second rinse, the fact is a big dose of caffeine does go out in the first steep. So it wouldn’t hurt to do a 30 second rinse. Again, Oolongs are great for this since they need to open up anyway. And of course Puers as well.

Now the other myth is that tea caffeine is different than coffee caffeine. And that’s false. Caffeine is caffeine. however, tea has other components which give the caffeine a steady effect rather than a jolt.

There was a journal article I read that basically came to these conclusions as well, but they didn’t use normal steeping conditions as they’ve noted in this post. I think the result was that a 16 minute steep removed most of the caffeine from tea, resulting in nothing you’d really want to resteep. :)
