Plastic, Glass, or Metal for Travel Mugs?
I’m sure this discussion has been had but I’m new here and am desperate to confirm my suspicions! I had a plastic Bodum travel mug for a while but it’s wrecked now and I had to start using a Contigo. However, I find tea just tastes awful coming out of a metal mug. Anyone else have this same experience? Or am I insane? Can anyone recommend a decent plastic or glass travel mug that’s also leak-proof? Thanks!
Yes, this one has been discussed many times. Here’s a recent discussion:

I’m stuck between the metal & the glass. It tastes good out of the glass but doesn’t keep hot for long periods. Stainless steel keeps it super hot but it doesn’t taste good (herbal teas are okay).
I love my timolinos and they’re definitely my first choice. I tried glass travel mugs but just broke too many.
Glass and ceramic definitely taste the best to me, but you have issues of insulation and of course shattering. I dislike the metallic taste I get with metal mugs, but I find plastic mugs dull the taste of tea. Really haven’t found anything I love yet.
I just bought a Davidstea carry mug (similar to the Timolino) and I LOVE it. I got it Friday.
Thanks so much, guys! Glad to know I’m not the only one who doesn’t like the taste in the metal mugs! If I find anything good I’ll post about it :) and thanks for the suggestions!
I have used so many travel mugs in my day and now I am super picky. I have had one too many white and greens taste horrible from metal tumblers. I LOVE this porcelain-lined one I got from Camellia Sinensis: http://camellia-sinensis.com/en/teaware/tea-bottles/bouteille-a-the-en-bambou-porcelaine
It just makes any tea taste better.
I will only go with plastic for lower temp teas, then metal for my more robust ones. I suppose double-walled glass is the best option, but I have smashed more than my fair share.
It’s an airtight seal :) My only issue with it is that it does not retain heat as well as my metal tumblers. But, other than that it is probably my favorite in my collection. The infuser is pretty awesome too!
The problem with the double walled ceramic ones is that you can’t microwave them if the tea goes cold….I had one that worked brilliantly from Starbucks but decided to tempt fate and put it in the microwave. Bad move. The stainless ones are ok for some teas, but I’ve found they pull the sweetness from some teas/make tea taste flat. I drink milk tea, so there’s another level of “issue” with the plastic lids smelling of milk if you don’t wash them immediately, which I never seem to do. It’s certainly a quandary!
