Sullivan Street Tea and Spice Company?
Over the weekend, I was looking for some staple, reasonably priced everyday teas that I could be sure contained no natural or artificial flavorings. I settled on Sullivan St. Tea and Spice Company in New York at onsullivan.com. I ended up settling on four 4 oz. bags since there wasn’t a sampler. And I didn’t want to get 4 oz. of anything I wasn’t absolutely certain I could enjoy, so I played it pretty safe. I ordered Assam Premium TGFOP, Earl Grey, Moroccan Mint and a jasmine-scented black tea called Genghis Khan. They sent me a free 1 oz. sample of Masala Chai with my order. The teas were all shipped in sturdy airtight brown bags that I’ll probably just seal in plastic bags as I open them since I don’t have a lot of tins.
The box just arrived, so I decided to try the Assam first. It’s a little bitter. Maybe I’ll try reducing the temperature next time. In any case, I needed to add a little honey and milk to make it work. I mean, it’s VERY similar to every other Assam I’ve had, so nothing life-changing, but not bad. And honestly after some bad experiences with Teavana, I’m grateful to have something simple and straightforward that doesn’t smell or taste like fruit-flavored chemicals.
Have any of you ever tried this company? Do you recommend anything in particular from them?
Incidentally, how do you get the fake fruit smell out of a tin? I soaked this particular now-empty Teavana tin in baking soda for a day, and it didn’t make much of a dent. I don’t feel comfortable storing any other tea in it because of the smell.
I usually run mine through the dishwasher, but when I do not have access to that I soak them in vinegar, dish soap, and boiling water…same treatment I used to get labels and smells off jars :P
Sadly this does not work for spice jars that once held garlic…
I’ve tried a couple of teas from there a few years ago. I also picked up some neato cooking oil that was made from Camellia Sinensis seeds. The teas didn’t blow me away but there weren’t crazy expensive so that is ok by me. I just have too much tea coming in through blogging samples to be a regular customer of theirs.
My favorite website for good, reasonably priced teas is www.svtea.com, Simpson and Vail. Their prices are reasonable. Their teas are not artificial like many Teavana teas. They have many, many straight unflavored teas.
