Japanese Teapots

I have some rooibos teas I will need to stock soon from Tealux and wanted to buy a Japanese teapot. Tealux only had the really large pots before but I like this little one. Does anyone know anything about it? The price is pretty good.

It looks like a decent tokoname teapot but I didn’t see any pictures of the metal infuser, which is an important feature to consider. These types of teapots either have a removable basket infuser or a built in mesh infuser. For brewing Japanese greens, I prefer the latter because it gives the tea leaves more room to expand.

Also note that this “Japanese style” teapot is actually made in China.

Unfortunately the more ‘reasonably-priced’ Japanese-style teapots tend to usually be Chinese knock-offs. Doubly so with cast iron ones.

There are some quality made-in-China tetsubins. Just make sure that they are porcelain lined and lead free, etc.

My understanding is that tetsubins were first made in China, so they aren’t automatically bad!

I suggest you to look at Yunomi or Den’s. this are tea stores specializing in Japanese teas and teaware. Another good store I’ve been impressed with is Zen Tea Life. I didn’t order Japanese but ordered Korean teaware which was authentic high quality and very reasonably priced.

+1 on Zen tea life! All the teaware I have gotten from them was quite good and cheap. I know o-cha has authentic as well, with good pricing.

I knew I shouldn’t have looked at that site! Had to get myself a couple of those adorable Korean wooden coasters.

Ive got those too! They smell amazing, and look great! Just FYI, don’t put any warm teacup on it containing delicate tea. The cedar will begin scent the bottom of your cup. It makes most shou puerh and Chinese blacks smell amazing though!

Oh, good to know, thanks!

Love Zen Tea Life! Very happy with my teaware purchases from them.

I checked out Zen Tea Life, they have some really cool stuff. Alas, I don’t think I have the money for an order now. I have to keep them in mind though.

Here’s a small one in a similar finish that lists its origin as “Tokoname, Aichi Prefecture, Japan” http://www.rishi-tea.com/product/fukugata-tokoname-teapot/teapots
Rishi also offers a 15% discount if you sign up for their newsletter, but I’m not sure how reasonable their Canadian shipping is.

this is where I get my pots from, and from a reliable source here in NL.
the one you want is not a real pot, but will do for starting your quest to a proper Japanese teapot. :)

Wow, those are beautiful. Now that I think about it, I would prefer to buy an authentic one and have it many years instead of a knock off.

Actually been looking through those and have found two reasonable priced teapots. Of course if I order a teapot from there will have to try some of their teas too. Do you have a favourite sencha there?

Wow, thanks for sharing this site. Their greens are quite reasonably priced, especially the gyokuro! :)

Now I’m curious!

Who is your source in the Netherlands?

They look cool, have to translate from Yen to Dollars though.

In the upper right hand corner you can change to Cdn or US dollars.

Okay, I think it’s better then to go a good quality one. Thanks for the ideas. I’ll check some of those out.

I like this one:

I like that the infuser lifts out. Not having any experience with some other Japanese teapots I don’t know how easy they are to clean. With most of them it looks like the infuser is attached.

Hah, I actually decided to order this and the matching cups yesterday! :)

Great minds think alike! lol Ummm….what’s that about matching cups??? (going to take a second look)

Oh, I LOVE those cups! Thanks for the link. I couldn’t find them before.

Yunomi has a very similar teapot to the one you first mentioned as well:

Not at all similar to the one you posted, but I’m in love with this one http://yunnansourcing.com/en/teapots-ceramic-and-bone-china/3211-ceramic-lotus-flower-kyusu-teapot-220ml.html

Adorable! :3
