Description

When preparing to enjoy the Lao Cong Shui Xian Oolong, one is first greeted by a woody aroma reminiscent of the forest after a mid-April storm. This rich and complex roasted oolong’s deep caramel colored liquor produces a medium to full-bodied brew with a bright astringency, lingering finish, slightly sweet hints of fig, and undertones of narcissus flower.

Lao Cong Shui Xian is a Wuyi Rock Tea made from old trees of Shui Xian cultivar. This name translates to ‘Water Sprite’ or ‘Narcissus’ in English, while Lao Cong means ‘old bush’. Shui Xian, although less well known in the United States, is a common varietal in Wuyi. However, the traditional process of making this oolong is quite complicated. Lao Cong Shui Xian is grown in three areas of Wuyi: Huiyuan Keng, Wu San Di, and Jianyang Shufang, where farmers plant these trees many years before they are intended to be harvested due to its slow growth in comparison with that of many other oolongs. Plenty of extra time on the plant allows its leaves to accumulate minerals and develop a deep, fragrant aroma, while complex processing accentuates their mature flavor.
