From white2tea

Also referred to as Zhengshan Xiaozhong and Lapsang Souchong, this is a classic black tea from Wuyi in Fujian province. While some modern versions of this tea are smoked, the traditional version is processed with no smoke. It has naturally occurring flavors of yams and pine, with a rich body.

I’ve tried several zhengshan xiaozhong from different places and I think this is my favorite. A good black tea for any occasion, a little more special than a daily drinker but not as pricey as some of white2tea’s other offerings. Complex sweet flavor with some savory undertones, I’m thinking of sweet potatoes and maple syrup but also red currant? Very strong but without overwhelming some of the subtler notes. The caffeine kick is noticeable and tough on an empty stomach.

My work friend who’s on mat leave right now had a small get together last night to celebrate her son’s 100th day. I’ve never really seen 100 day celebrations/parties, but apparently it’s pretty common and traditional in China (where she’s from). It was very cute – she had ordered a fancy cake and he was in an adorable matching outfit. Mostly it was just nice to catch up though.

Obviously we drank tea – I told her partner to surprise me and because he is a good friend who knows my tastes well and I am a predictable tea drinker he made me a nice giant mug of this tea. I know it’s not pine smoked, but as a Western mug it definitely still has a naturally smokey character. Also very brisk and woody though, and just a little malty. Really pleasant and soothing – and a surprisingly great compliment to matcha flavoured cake.

Surviving 100 days with a new baby is definitely worth celebrating!
