From Trident Booksellers and Cafe Boulder Colorado

We worked with farmers in Assam in order to create this very special black tea grown from wild seeds and painstakingly produced in a whole leaf style, making it suitable for gong-fu style tea brewing. It is exceedingly bright and complex, while also being strong enough to take milk and sugar if one wishes.

Though Assam is the largest tea growing area in the world, it produces mostly orthodox black teas for mass market consumption. We hope that our Trident Assam shows that the region is also capable of producing high quality specialty teas.

From Daylon R Thomas!  Thanks so much for that excellent tea delivery!  I wanted to accomplish a few sipdowns before diving into the box.  I was extra thrilled to try these Trident teas, ever since I read about them when Daylon originally tried them.   Though Trident specifically says this is an assam from India, it most definitely reminds me of a Taiwanese assam.  The flavor profile is the same as a PTA – Premium Taiwanese Assam.  Somewhat starchy, malty.   Maybe slightly different tasting from a Taiwan tea, but in an unlabeled taste test, I bet I would guess a PTA.  This is quite delicious and DEFINITELY high quality from this shop.  The leaves are huge.
Steep #1 // 2 teaspoons // 22 minutes after boiling // 2 minute steep
Steep #2 // just boiled // 3 1/2 min steep

I’m so glad you loved that one. PTA’s are more fruity to me when I try them, but that one is more toffee sweet and drying for me despite having a lot of layers to it.

tea-sipper

Yes, I can definitely see that! PTA is usually strawberry to me, with caramel. This also reminded me of a Ruby, which usually is like the nougat in certain chocolates. So this tea was like a mix of those flavors!

So, this is going to be the beginning of a really long backlog. Over the summer last year, I was freaked out about ordering teas from overseas due to shipping limits and the pandemic, so I reached out to a friend living in the same area as this coffee shop. She said there was a bunch of teahouses near where she lived, so I planned out stops of a visit and stumbled upon this one. It’s a coffee/teahouse/bar/bookstore in one. It was after my own heart. She didn’t hear about it, and she started going. I also splurged a lot on this place because of their selection, and I wanted to support this kind of business.

This was from my second mega order of black teas, and I wanted to put something down before it was removed from the site. I don’t have more to add than what was written, but this is a very hearty Assam, even gong fu. Thick with leather, tannin, and milk chocolate notes. Heavy and brisk too. I don’t have more to add than that right now, but it’s a breakfast style tea sure to please. I’m have tempted to send this one to you over, Whiteantlers because it seems like it would be up you alley. I’ll write more on this one in the future.

Onto the other notes!

Trident is a great place, I loved going there when I was visiting Boulder a couple years ago!

Thus it needs to be added on here! I’m glad to hear it! I want to hear more!

I was in Boulder just for a week at a conference, but conferences tend to drain my energy and I sometimes need to escape, so Trident was a perfect place to escape to :D

I actually got in touch with the owner, Peter, before visiting. He’s super nice and very much into both tea and coffee. They even set up their own pu-erh storage!
