One of the main cultivars from China, Tieguanyin is also reasonably widely grown in Taiwan. Tieguanyin means “Iron Guan Yin, the goddess of mercy.” Legend has it that a poor scholar prayed to an iron statue of Guan Yin for salvation. She came to him in a dream and taught him how to produce tea. When he woke he found the tea bushes growing on the hillside. The tea produced was so popular that it was named after the goddess. This specific tea comes from Taiwan and is high roasted, producing a rich nutty tea with hints of the charcoal roasting coming through. Tastes of toasted nuts balance perfectly with the lightly smoky aromas, a wonderful example of a high roasted Tieguanyin from Taiwan.
