This amazing tea comes from genetically wild trees cultivated in semi-wild natural garden. Age of the trees – 50-70 years. On the market it’s not so difficult to find yesheng hongcha but this one has amazing depth of taste and aroma. If it’s your first time with yesheng tea, please look at the leaves and buds. They are different than regular big leaf cultivar from Yunnan. Dry dark brown and copper like leaves smells very strong – like sour exotic fruits with heavy pine resin notes. This smell reminds me a mix of wild tea with good Dancong oolong or high class IPA beer. I personally love that flavour. Taste is well connected with aroma. Texture is smooth and little bit oily with well pronounced notes of chocolate, honey, ripe passion fruit, mango and pine needle like sharpness.

Bitterness is very balanced. One of the best hong cha we have ever had.

Origin: Fengqing county, Lincang prefecture, Yunnan, China.

Vintage: April 2021

Tea vartietal: wild varietal of Camellia Sinensis cultivated in semi-wild, natural garden.

Tea trees age: 50-70 year old.

2021 harvest

A very approachable red tea with complex aroma and taste. Needs a longer first steep to awaken the leaf when made in a small teapot. Also good steeped western. Rich osmanthus in the nose; luscious tropical fruit flavors mixed with cacao-cocoa, malt and cedar; tenacious aftertaste. Energy flows throughout the body and pushes outward.

This tea has many similarities to my favorite Yunnan wild red tea https://steepster.com/teas/the-essence-of-tea/100896-2022-spring-da-xue-shan-wild-red-tea but it’s not as potent or pungent and is maybe a little flatter in taste. It does have that sweet and comforting cocoa and sweet potato presence of Fengqing red teas, though. Woodier than the Da Xue Shan.

[Spring 2021 harvest]

This tea is sweeter and has fewer bourbon notes than one of my favourite black teas – the Yunnan Sourcing’s Feng Qing Yesheng Hong Cha. I have a sense this one has slightly higher oxidation level, but otherwise they are actually quite similar. The YS offering is cheaper, but when taxes and shipping to EU are accounted for, the difference is not as drastic.

The aftertaste is amazing here – it is very throat-biting and engaging. The flavours of resin, citrus zest, passion fruit and others linger and evolve for a while. There is also that bitterness characteristic for this varietal.

The mouthfeel is pleasant, but a little boring – there isn’t anything bad about it, it’s just not the selling point.
