Sashima is a small production zone in Ibaraki Prefecture, which is northeast of Tokyo. With several young producers, this is also a very dynamic region that aims to produce high-quality and varied teas. Some of the producers, such as Yoshida, are very talented when it comes to making black tea. Yoshida’s work has been recognized many times, in particular for his Izumi black teas but also for his other works.
This summer black tea was made with the Hokumei cultivar. This variety originates from Ibaraki’s neighbouring prefecture of Saitama, which is also famous for its Sayama teas. Being descended from a seed of the Sayama-midori cultivar, Hokumei is a green tea cultivar with unique aromas. There is also a floral fragrance when the cultivar is wilted.
This Hokumei “wakôcha” has a truly heavenly, very intense, sweet fragrance with aromas of honey and violets, and nuances of blackcurrants and vanilla.
On the palate, the tannins are barely noticeable and the attack is relatively light. In the mouth, the notes are also once again very rich, sweet, aromatic, honeyed and floral. Even as this very delicious impression appears, this black tea remains just as fluid and refreshing.
This tea is sure please fans of intensely sweet summer black teas that resembles second flush Darjeelings.
