This is our first ever Taiwanese oolong, by the wonderful Chang Family located in Chi Lai Mountain. Tea leaves grown at a higher elevation tend to grow at a slower rate, concentrating all of their nutrients. This means the tea will be picked later in comparison to lower elevation teas, and will also have a much lighter, more elegant flavour profile. when hot water hits this tea, you can smell a nice subtle toastiness, like cereal grain, and a nice hint of sweetness, like honey and cooked peaches. Its pale liquor yields a smooth, buttery and mellow cup.

Another one steeped haphazardly, mostly just going off of the color of the liquor. Not because I’m an expert, but because I’m lazy ha ha…

High mountain oolongs aren’t my thing, and this was no different. I gave it several steeps even though it wasn’t my favorite. Classic green oolong leafy and mineral flavor with a thick, silky mouthfeel. Tasted a little bit of peaches and cream in the beginning, but that quickly evolved to a strong floral character. I’m not good at identifying floral notes, so I won’t try to guess what flower it was.

Anyway, I’m sure it’s a high quality tea but just not the tea for me. :P

Adventaggedon Day Three – 4/5

Gongfu!

Best part of my advent selection this year has so far been having at least one gongfu session each day. In past years, my advents haven’t really fit that style of tea and I haven’t had enough time during the day to accommodate doing a session on top of advents…

This one was as lovely as expected. From the first couple steeps, I was really quickly won over by the smooth and buttery mouthfeel of this greener oolong with notes of very silky coconut and condensed milk along with fresh tasting florals. That was consistent throughout the entire session that I enjoyed. Lilacs, orchid, and coconut milk.

My last few advent teas of the day were super closely bunched together just because of how the pacing of my day ended up shaking out, and because I was kind of hoping if I waited long enough the rain would let up and I’d get some brighter light for photos. That never really happened, but this tea was a very good excuse to slow down and just take some time to sit with the tea for the day.
