From The Tao of Tea

Cascadia is a wholesome and hearty barley tea blended with juniper berries. Barley tea is commonly consumed across East Asia, particularly in Korea and Japan, and is enjoyed for its sweet and toasty flavor.

Our blend features premium ‘purple karma’ barley from the Tuality Plains Great Grains initiative of Oregon whose mission is to reinvigorate local production of heritage grains.

Collected in 1924 by an American visiting Tibet, this heirloom variety of hulless colored barley was brought back to the United States and tucked away for many years in the USDA Seed Repository in Idaho. Once rediscovered, it was named “Karma.”

Barley is high in soluble fiber.

Ingredients: Roasted Barley (Purple Karma Variety), Juniper Berries.

FLAVOR PROFILE:
Smooth and hearty with a sweet grain taste. Juniper berries lend subtle hints of pine and resin.

THE ECOLOGICAL COLLECTION:
Labels have no adhesive and can be recycled; tea bags are made from non-GMO plant material that will break down in a backyard compost pile and have no string or tag attached; canisters are made from reusable/biodegradable birch with a decorative ribbon closure; inner packaging is biodegradable.

BREWING INSTRUCTIONS:
Steep at 200°F for 3 minutes.

A sipdown! (M: 5 Y: 92)

Cascadia. An area I would like to visit one day. But when? With whom? Let’s see if this tea broughts me there at least virtually.

OK, I don’t know what to expect… for some reason I am thinking about Douglas firs and another association is Douglas Fir tea by Juniper Ridge. But this tea contains juniper at least. And barley. That sounds good to me and suitable to Cascadia region.

If I remember right, I travelled through this region only virtually, no matter if I was train driver, truck driver or just looking at the maps and Street View. As I wrote, I hope to see it once with my own eyes and not on screen only.

Well, this tea, as it contains only two ingredients, tastes after those ingredients. Crushing juniper berries brought a piny twist to the, well roasted, barley. It was like drinking grain fields with pines on the horizon. The aroma is just like grain field. Harvest is coming in just a few days. Maybe the harvester just didn’t come yet today.

Now I want to visit Cascadia even more.

Apparently The Tao of Tea has a small line of these teas in birch packaging. Not going to lie — it caught my eye — the lone package of Cascadia mixed in with The Tao of Tea’s usual offerings in metal canisters.

This is made with a Tibetan heirloom variety of barley grown in Oregon and juniper berries. Hint: smoosh those berries in the bag before brewing. One bag for 6 to 8 ounces. I chose boiling water instead of the recommended 200F. I also brew the bag several times, the first for 3-5 minutes, both the second and third for howeverlong. Grounding grain pays no attention to the forgetful mind.

This week has felt like such a blessing. A mellow, warm grainy-sweet and resinous-cool Sunday night cup falls right in with all the doors that have opened. I feel like I’m regaining my sense of intuition. I’ve been out of touch for far too long.

Hope you’re all well.
