In recent years this unique tea has been building a reputation as an earthy vibrant form of green tea known for its strong flavour, adaptability and health benefits. The tea itself is made from shade grown Japanese green tea leaves that have been stone ground into a fine powder. Traditionally the tea is whisked with a bamboo whisk in hot water to produce a thick and frothy liquor. This tea originated in China and became very popular with Chan (Zen) Buddhist monks. As Chan migrated into Japan and became Zen, this powdered green tea moved with it. Today Matcha is still used in Buddhist ceremonies and the Japanese tea ceremony. Matcha is also in ice cream, cakes, cookies and other baked goods. Matcha is prized for its health benefits. Because the leaves are ground and whisked in water the drinker consumes the leaves, therefore absorbing 100% of the antioxidants. Regular intake of antioxidants may help maintain healthy skin, teeth and bones. They may also help with lowering blood pressure and bad cholesterol. Some studies have shown antioxidants to have cancer fighting properties as well.
