If you like Autumnal Darjeeling Tea you must try this unique baked creation from our Tea Master! Nutty, dried fruit sweetness and a complexity that evokes aged oolongs. A very satisfying and soothing cup. GABA Tea is one of a rare bread of teas that was initially developed, not only for its resulting drinking enjoyment, but rather for its purported health benefits. If you are not familiar with this aspect, check out the info tab below. Now that this is said, we need to admit that the best thing about GABA tea is that it is wonderfully good in the cup! Fresh Gaba is all fruit in the nose and mouth with very smooth tannins leaving a crisp, slightly tart, but never bitter feeling in the mouth. There is very good Lot of this offered here. When expertly baked, like it is the case here, the tart fruitiness is over-shadowed by top notes of freshly roasted nuts in the taste and texture with a smooth dry finish which lingers on very pleasantly in the mouth. We’ve compared our Baked Gaba to a Second Flush Darjeeling Tea. In this case, we would rather compare it to an Autumnal Darjeeling for the deeper nuttier taste. Dried-fruits are also present and a complex tobacco-like sweetness that reminds us of good aged oolongs can also be perceived. Speaking of aged tea, we are convinced that this tea makes a perfect “thé de garde” and will fare very well if you consider ageing it. Lot 584 was baked in Oct. 2016 from a very good spring production. We humbly consider this Lot to be the best we’ve made yet.

This sample came from Kittenna – it’s something that, if I were looking to place an order with Taiwan Tea Crafts, I could actually see myself being interested in ordering so I was excited to try it out. I believe I have tea from lot 364, for what it’s worth.
Normally this is something I’d likely look to try Gong Fu, but I don’t have quite a big enough sample to give it a proper go as a Gong Fu tea so I’m just drinking it Western instead. I think it still gives me a pretty good representation of the flavour though. It’s actually really good, and quite smooth! More of a full bodied flavour for sure. I’m getting a mix of notes including heavy roast/toastyness, whole wheat bread, and a little bit of char in the body and finish, honey top notes, floral and raisin undertones, and wood in the aftertaste. It’s a good balance of more umami type tasting notes, and overall natural sweetness.

Whether they actually have the effect they were developed to have or not, I have really enjoyed the GABA oolongs that I have had thus far. This is the second I tried from TTC—the first being the (not deep) baked GABA. I have been appreciating baked and roasty oolongs more and more lately, so I was excited to try this one last Friday.
These rolled leaves had a sweet, baked smell that intensified upon being doused with boiling water. The liquor came out a deep brown and smooth, with a roasted, sweet, nutty flavor. The roasty notes intensified in the following steep, without drowning out the sweetness. Overall, this was a simple, enjoyable experience, and I’ll look forward to having more of this soon.
