From Taiwan Tea Crafts

This spring 2023, we were thrilled to put the turmoil of the pandemic behind us and resume our custom production of High-Mountain GABA Tea with Mr. Chen, our long-time collaborator, who is also well-known for our Organic Shibi High-Mountain Fragrant Oolong. This tea was a project in the making since many years as we coaxed Mr. Chen to consider dedicating his early Fall crop to making GABA Tea instead of fragrant green oolong. Initially, the project was to purchase the leaves from him to bring down from his 1300 m garden to our premises for production but, in the Fall 2021, we received a conditional OK from our friend: he would agree only if he could produce the tea himself. Of course, we could not refuse and were more than happy to share some knowledge acquired though the years to help him out. A few test batches were produced last winter that were more than conclusive. We had created a bit of hype around samples we shared with some of our wholesale customers and ended-up pre-selling the whole planned Spring 2023 production! We found a small quantity that was not called for and are very excited to propose this Spring 2023 Lot 1225 to our Taiwan Tea Crafts customers alongside a fresh new Lot 1257 produced in early September 2023. If you are acquainted with GABA teas, you will be in familiar territory but also pleasantly surprised by the expansive sensory appeal of this tea (if you are new to GABA teas, you may find a description of this style of tea in the tabs below). Every aspect of it is more concentrated just as you can expect from a tea produced from high-mountain grown leaves. The aroma and taste of this tea brought back this writer to fond memories of picking sun-ripened wild field strawberries in a land where summers are short and eartlhly offerings are a gift. The tartness of this tea is velvety and perfectly balanced by the tangy fruitiness of the liqueur. The texture is thick and very smooth and builds up to one of the most pleasant long aftertaste which leaves the mouth fresh and yearning for more. This tea is sold fresh, without any baking stage, in order to not hinder its expressive natural goodness. Very generous in the cup and in the number of infusions one can achieve with the same leaves, just like a good high mountain tea. A pure delight!

Lot 1225

I think I finally have the word to describe that mix of fruity and tangy present in unroasted GABA oolong — mangosteen — a combination of wild strawberry, lychee, pineapple, peach and vanilla sugar. GABA teas’ typical squashiness is there, delicate like a squash blossom rather than lightly meaty like the flesh. GABA processing generally produces a tea with great longevity and this leaf is no exception. Excellent GABA tea. Very clean with a lingering aftertaste.
